Jason Mumpower, left, house Republican leader from upper East Tennessee, and Lieutenant Gov. Ron Ramsey, a Republican from Blountville, are ready for the opening of the 106th General Assembly at the state capitol in Nashville, with the GOP in control of both houses for the first time since President Ulysses S. Grant’s administration.

"The last Republican to serve as House speaker was Bill Jenkins, who held the office in 1969 and 1970. At the time of his election, the House was evenly divided with 49 Republicans, 49 Democrats and one Independent. The Independent voted for Jenkins."

Obviously, they're not very swift on history. The Independent, a bizarre old man iconoclast from West TN, refused to vote for either the Democrat or Republican. A Black Knoxville Democrat broke the logjam and voted for Jenkins. Heaven forbid they'll mention that.
