Rep. Patrick J. Murphy (D-Pa.) has been one of the most high-profile freshman members of Congress in his first term.
As one of Barack Obamas most visible supporters in Pennsylvania, he routinely appears as a surrogate to tout Obamas candidacy. And because he is the only Iraq war veteran serving in Congress, Democrats have turned to Murphy as someone with the credibility to speak out against the war.
But while Murphy has emerged as a rising star in Democratic circles, Republicans have quietly recruited a candidate with an equally compelling story who is now on pace to raise the amount of money necessary to seriously contest the suburban Philadelphia seat. And the Iraq war a topic that seemed to propel Murphy to his 2006 win also will be the key issue for his challenger.
Tom Manion, a retired Marine colonel, is running uncontested for the Republican nomination to challenge Murphy. The pharmaceutical executive decided to run as a way of honoring his son, Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion, who was killed by a sniper last April during his second tour of duty in Iraq.
The local Republican Party helped clear the primary field to secure the nomination for Manion, and the districts former GOP congressman, Mike Fitzpatrick, helped recruit him into the race and introduced him to committee officials in Washington this year.

This could be a race worth watching.
Yeah
Here’s hoping he wins the election.
Unless he is self-funding, he’s unlikely to make a dent against the endless supply of Soros’ $ available to the Democrat.
He’s got a tough road ahead to knock off Murphy, hopefully he can do it.
Murphy’s a slimy ex-military lawyer who comes across as a whiny, airheaded wuss. A real Marine should be able to take care of him.
Now I actually have a reason to vote in November!
Paratrooper AND Judge Advocate? How many lawyers have the balls to jump out of airplanes? Sounds to me like he’s trying to present himself as an executive type and a grunt at the same time. It works in Pennsylvania. Just look at how Santorum slapped Casey around in those 3 debates. Didn’thelp him any. Pennsylvania voters are wusses and they vote for them.
Wasn’t Murphy funded by Soros ?
Yep. Here are the top five contributors to Murphy in 2006. Note the last one. Has Hussein Obama bought Murphy's endorsement in 2008? Hmmmmm.
moveon.org (Soros) $88,112
ActBlue (progressive PAC) $38,040
Cozen O'Connor (Murphy's law firm) $32,550
Democratic Congressional Campaign Cmte $16,000
Hope Fund (Obama PAC) $12,326
Here's another interesting little gem that popped up.
I wonder if there's a campaign finance problem lurking here for Murphy?
THANKS BUD-I din’t have time to watch Chris Matthews but that interview was right on. He made Casey look well informed.
In interesting race. Murphy won in 2006 by 1,500 votes with low turnout, we’ll see if it was a fluke.
