McHenry's GOP Challenger Questions Congressman's Ethics, Honesty

10th District Republican congressional challenger Lance Sigmon has released a TV commercial that details how in 2004 Rep. Patrick McHenry “purposely misled voters about his resume,” according to Sigmon.

In the ad, Sigmon questions “why McHenry claimed to run a business that didn’t exist,” when he first ran for Congress in the 2004 Republican primary. The TV spot also states that McHenry improperly profited from a 2006 real estate deal in which “a campaign donor sold McHenry a house undervalued by at least $25,500.

The highly respected political journal Roll Call, in an October 2007 article citing official North Carolina records, revealed that McHenry bought a house in October 2006 in Gaston County from county commissioner Allen Fraley for $87,500, although the house was appraised soon after that at $113,000.

A few days after the sale, Fraley gave McHenry another $500 campaign contribution. Prior to this transaction, according to campaign records, Fraley had given McHenry two other donations of $500 each.

“Buying a house for more than $25,000 below the appraised value and then receiving another $500 campaign contribution from the seller is just one example of why elected officials have such dismal approval ratings,” Sigmon said. “National polls for the last year have consistently shown that the Congress as a whole has approval ratings well under 20%.”

During his 2004 campaigns, McHenry told voters that he owned “McHenry Real Estate” and that he was the “the only small businessman in this race,” Sigmon pointed out.

However, North Carolina records again show that McHenry received his real estate sales license on October 28, 2003—just 38 days before he filed his candidacy papers with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on December 4, 2003.

McHenry continues to be the topic of bad press. In shades of Doug Lamborn, he won a strongly Republican open seat after a very nasty primary, which he won on a recount. Hard feelings remain over McHenry’s campaign tactics. And now, he’s being hammered by ethics charges and the state GOP establishment is not rallying around him. Read the whole article carefully- these are serious charges.

I like this guy.

He brought up the whole minimum wage in Somoa. Which drove the Dems nuts because Pelosi exempted Somoa to protect the tuna industry.

This video from the House floor is a must see (again)
