U.S. Rep. Jim Ramstad is expected to announce that he is retiring from Congress.
His office released a statement today saying he plans to "make a major announcement ...concerning his future plans."
Ramstad has represented the Third District, made up of the southern, western and northern suburbs of Minneapolis, since he was elected to his first of 9 terms in 1990.
A spokesman for Ramstad, John Magnuson, declined to comment on the congressman's announcement, which is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Minnetonka.
But an email press release on the announcement included a file entitled, "retire_advisory," that had Magnuson's name attached to it. He confirmed sending the document.

The 3rd Congressional District, once the premier GOP bastion in the state, has been trending slightly more Dem in the last few elections.
Ramstad, like him or not, represented the district well.
If the Dems put up (a) a very centrist-sounding Dem and/or (b) a female, this race could be quite interesting.

I could well be wrong, but I thought Ramstad was kind of a RINO.
That’s my district. I wonder if Jason Lewis could be persuaded to run.
That would be interesting. I always assumed he lived in Woodbury or somewhere in southern Washington County from past comments he’s made on his show. But maybe he does now live in the 3rd District.
I know I risk getting pummelled for saying this - but the GOP nominee is more than likely gonna have to be pro-choice. The district has always been a pro-choice district.
Looks like you beat me by a few minutes on this.
Ramstad’s lifetime ACU rating is 68.6. Always struck me as a Republican who would stand up and be counted it if served his purpose. Hopefully we can get someone like Kline (93.1 ACU) to run.
