South Dakota Republicans Gaining Momentum for Senate Race
KMEG Channel 44 News ^ | August 7, 2007

Election 2008 is starting to heat up, but not just in the run for the White House.

There are some other candidates who want to serve in the nation's capitol, KMEG 14's Mario Giraldo joins us live in the studio to explain.

The Union County Lincoln dinner is about two things: good food and the opportunity for Republican candidates to gain momentum for a very important seat in Washington D.C.

It's a race that’s starting to heat up; the race for senator, and tonight Union County residents got a chance to meet the candidates.

“We not only just get to hear their views, we get to meet them and it's a big decision who we send to Washington D.C.,” says Dan Lederman, Union County Republican chair.

Senator Tim Johnson's seat will be up for grabs in November's election.

“We of course wish him all the best. We want him to recover, we want the best for senator Tim Johnson and his family, but ultimately, if he decides to run or not, we still have an election,” says Joel Dysktra.

This candidate says Johnson's continuing recovery from a brain aneurysm has nothing to do with him throwing his name into the mix.

“It’s important that Republicans have a candidate that can articulate the views and the principals in which Republicans have based their politics,” says Dykstra.

Candidate Sam Kephart says it's time for a change.

“This is about a larger issue. The problems that I'm talking about happened before Senator Johnson was elected and he’s now had two terms to deal with it,” says Kephart.

But whatever happens in November's election, Senator John Thune says these candidates are helping themselves out with events like this.

This is good news. While Tim Johnson deserves prayers for a full recovery, that doesn’t mean that he deserves another term in the Senate.

In terms of winning the seat, I hope the Dems have the chutzpah to run Johnson. On the other hand, for the sake of the man and his family, I hope they search deep in their souls for one teeny, tiny scrap of remaining decency and forego such a thing.

Johnson should resign ASAP so he can focus on improving his health and spending time with his family.

What decency ? That’s gone with the wind.

This is the best chance the GOP has to pick up a Senate seat and there is no reason why they can’t run a solid campaign on the issues without playing up his health.

Let’s hope that the GOP voters in South Dakota don’t nominate a DEAD-MAN-TALKING like they did against ms. Hearsth in the last congressional election. If the Libertarian candidate is allowed in any debate then the GOP should find a Green candidate as a counterweight. I don’t believe we ahve the brains for it. Just look how Janklow blew it big time for the House seat.

Oh I’ve no doubt that there are a dozen different ways that the GOP can screw up this opportunity. My fear is that they’ll hit them all.
