North Carolina Rep. Walter B. Jones status as one of the most outspoken congressional Republican critics of President Bushs Iraq war policies has drawn him national attention that he had not previously received in a House career now in its seventh term.
But Jones maverick posture is not universally appreciated back home in eastern North Carolinas 3rd District, a conservative Republican stronghold that gave President Bush 68 percent of its votes in November 2004 more than a year and a half after the controversial war began.
The Iraq issue is central to a challenge Jones has drawn for next years Republican primary from Joseph R. McLaughlin, an Onslow County commissioner. McLaughlin is not that well-known to voters, especially outside his home county, but is seeking to spur a party backlash against Jones in a district that is home to three military bases, including the Marine Corps massive Camp Lejeune.

May it be his last term.
I do wish McLaughlin well. We need more veterans in Congerss. Life experience is very important to a public official’s outlook. While there’s nothing wrong with not being a veteran, those who are provide valuable insight when military issues arise, and we currently don’t have enough of that.
