Sherwood’s wife weighs into debate (PA House race)
The Wilkes Barre Times Leader ^ | Oct. 17, 2006 | KRIS WERNOWSKY

Over the weekend, voters in Don Sherwood’s congressional district began receiving “A personal note from Carol Sherwood” in which the congressman’s wife decries the political commercials that refer to her husband’s affair.

The six-paragraph typed note signed by Carol Sherwood – her first public comment on her husband’s affair – accuses Democratic challenger Chris Carney of using “negative campaigning” and “a personal attack” in political ads centered on her husband’s affair with a younger woman who claimed the congressman abused her.

“The negative ads approved by Chris Carney seem to be needlessly cruel. Private humiliation is one thing to endure, but to be repeatedly, publicly humiliated is quite another,” the letter reads. “When somebody hurts one of us, he hurts everyone in the family. Perhaps Carney gets some pleasure out of hurting our family, or maybe that’s what he thinks will make him a winner.”

First Don Sherwood cheats on this wife (and probably beats her, as well as his mistress), then he tries to use her to shield himself from criticism.

I cannot imagine a defense for Sherwood.

Wait...when did he cheat on his wife? 6 months ago? Or 10 years ago? It seems to be a big difference. If they held it together for years, it's clearly something they've gotten over and that's great, and he shouldn't attack him for it. It would seem appropriate for his wife to defend him then too.

I'd also be careful about saying he beat her unless you are VERY sure.

Anyhow, I don't know enough about the situation to be sure, but do you know enough about it to say that? It seems pretty hurtful.

Why wasn't there a primary challenge?

I'm not saying I'm certain beyond any doubt that he beat her, but promiscuous men who beat a mate don't usually confine it to one romance.

From an unknown substitute teacher with no professional staff who spent under $5,000. And even under those circumstances, she won 44% of the primary vote.

I wouldn't go that far without proof.

This seat wouldn't even be in play if a name candidate with funding challenged him in the primary.

Of course, you'd think the man (Sherwood) would be so humiliated from having this sordid mess exposed to the world, that he'd resign in shame, rather than stand for another term. I guess Clinton set the example of having no shame and standing firm.

This was the one race I could say with 99% certainty we were going to lose in a solid GOP district (that lasted voted 'Rat in 1958). I'm surprised he doesn't play Prodigy's "Smack My Bitch Up" out on the stump. Why he wasn't forceably exited from this contest is simply appalling. Unfortunately, his primary challenger was a liberal rodent running in the GOP, completely unviable.

On September 15, 2004, a woman locked herself inside the bathroom of Sherwood's Washington, D.C. apartment, and called 911 to report she was assaulted. When police arrived, the woman, Cynthia Ore, accused Sherwood of choking her, though he maintained he was only giving her a backrub. No charges were filed because both Sherwood and Ore refused to provide any details.

The details of that incident went unnoticed until 2005, when Veronica Hannevig, who ran against Sherwood on the Constitution Party ticket in 2004, distributed a copy of the police report to several newspapers and television stations. Sherwood eventually admitted he had a five-year extramarital affair with Ore, but denied abusing her.

Ore later filed a $5.5 million lawsuit against Sherwood, accusing him of repeatedly assaulting her during their relationship. [1] On November 8, 2005, Sherwood and Ore ended the lawsuit by reaching a settlement, the terms of which were not released.

The man has a doormat for a wife.

If I cheated on my wife the last thing she would do is send out letters excusing my behavior.

At best she would send my mistress a Fed Ex Package with my nads inside.

Denny Hastert has a mentality of "protecting the team" no matter what. It is a pattern that he followed in the Foley case and the George Ryan saga.

"The man has a doormat for a wife. "

Well, she (like Hillary did with Slick) may be willing to put up with it, because she enjoys the perks of being the wife of a powerful man.

Hillary is a doormat as well, but she does have Bill's nads in a drawer in her U.S. Senate desk.

Yes - but a good Coach knows that sometimes it is necessary to cut a player or two in order to truly "protect the team".

That's exactly how we'll lose a majority employing that operating procedure. If we do hold our majority, or even if we don't, I'm more and more leaning towards seeing him replaced.

Ouch. That's got to hurt. Good for her.

I wish every republican would bring out their families to decry how the politics of personal destruction is hurting families, especially the children.

In Virginia the Webb campaign paid bloggers were circulating a story that Allen's children were named after KKK leaders.

Imagine being his son, and going to school, and having people calling you "KKK", or worse. It's one thing to attack a man for being stupid, or ignorant, but we have to find a way to make politicians pay for sleazy personal attacks.

You are disgusting.

I assume you have facts to back up your absurd and libelous claim that he beat his wife, or his mistress?

And I assume you personally know that this woman isn't out there defending HERSELF from the harm the democrat is causing, rather than being forced out by her husband?

Like I said, you are disgusting.
