SUGAR LAND Mayor David Wallace will not run as a write-in Republican candidate for the congressional seat vacated by Tom DeLay.
Wallace announced his decision about the Congressional District 22 race today at a news conference at Sugar Land City Hall.
The decision comes after Republican party leaders from Fort Bend, Harris, Galveston and Brazoria counties selected Houston City Councilwoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs as the party's choice to run in the November election as a write-in candidate.
No Republican will appear on the ballot because DeLay stepped down after winning the nomination in March. A court ruled the party could not replace him on the ballot.
The only candidates on the ballot will be Democrat Nick Lampson and Libertarian Bob Smither.
This district is not going Democrat.
A few ad's telling Republican voters who the Republican candidate is and explaining how to write in the vote will finish Lampson.
Why do you think he is terrified about running against any Republican other then Delay?
Check out his website and see if you can tell that he is a Democrat.
A few ad's linking him to Pelosi will finish him quick.
I think the right to have a two Party system is enough motivation for Republican voters to figure out how to use the write-in.
We are not Democrats and we do not want Democrats leading our District.
So SSS, what about Gibbs, pure enough for you to vote for?
Actually, her name may be a plus, the SSG may be hard for the Democrats to duplicate.
Also, we may be able to use only SSG for the write-in, and not the whole name.
Does Texas require a majority for election? If the libertarian candidate picks up enough votes so that no one gets a majority, will there be a runoff?
No, largest plurality wins.
That's nuts. I don't believe it.
If Lampson is elected, the Republicans in the House should vote not to seat him.
It has been stated by the County Clerks office here in Harris County, Texas that "SSG", Shelley or Sekula or even Gibbs would be sufficient to confirm a vote for that particular candidate...
Sekula-Gibbs gets Republican backing
