It's easy to dismiss this. But if Roemer had no chance, why would he even consider it?

Don't be fooled. There is no such thing as a conservative Democrat these days.

" There is no such thing as a conservative Democrat these days." Absolutely correct. I think I'd extrapolate that statement out even further, today's democrats are socialists and have been since LBJ.

The republicans are woefully lacking in the conservative department also.

Nonetheless even most moderate Republicans are FAR better than Democrats. The Dems have become a monolithic socialist party. There is no longer such thing as dissent within the party, did you see their primary debates in 04?

There was a poll that came out recently showing Roemer only three points behind Lugar in a hypothetical matchup. I think it was a Democratic poll, so it probably should be taken with a grain of salt.

Excellent point. I think that the Democrats are hoping for Roemer's announcement and big fundraising to convince Lugar to retire rather than face his first real race in over a decade. In an open-seat race, Roemer would be a formidable candidate, since he is one of the last bona fide conservative Democrats (much more conservative than that poser Bayh) and was elected and reelected in a very conservative congressional district for years.
