An ostensibly nonpartisan voter registration drive in Western Pennsylvania has triggered accusations that workers were cheated out of wages and given instructions to avoid adding anyone to the voter rolls who might support the Democratic presidential nominee.

Sproul & Associates, a consulting firm based in Chandler, Ariz., hired to conduct the drive by the Republican National Committee, employed several hundred canvassers throughout the state to register new voters. Some workers yesterday said they were told to avoid registering Democrats or anyone who indicated support for Democratic nominee John F. Kerry.

"We were told that if they wanted to register Democrat, there was no way we were to register them to vote," said Michele Tharp, of Meadville, who said she was sent out to canvass door-to-door and outside businesses in Meadville, Crawford County. "We were only to register Republicans."

Tharp said volunteers were sent door-to-door to seek registrants but were instructed to first ask prospective new voters which candidate they planned to support.

"If they said Kerry, we were just supposed to say thank you and walk away," Tharp said.By Dennis B. Roddy, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

I suppose it's possible and even likely to some extent. However it certainly isn't on the scale of the attempted fraud the democrats have built their history on.

Anyone who does it should be prosecuted. Regular registration sites and valid identification at the polls would go a long way toward clearing things up.

IIRC (I used to live there, although it was over 20 years ago) that is a heavy dem area. I have a hard time believing this report.

Actually, so what? If they get the registrations then toss them, then I see an issue. If they ask door to door and screen out potential Dems, then no big deal. They are simply registering new Republicans. No harm in that.

Being from Pittsburgh I wouldn`t believe the "Pittsburgh Putz-Gazette" if they told me I hit the lottery.

Agree...let the Dems pay to register their own, or let new voters make the effort to go and register.

As long as their was no deceit, so what? It's not they registered people and then tossed it or went and picked up absentee ballots and then trashed them, which is what we're hearing is happening here in Florida.

We need a national voter registration card to end this multi-state voting that's occurring. I'd like to see face recognition, iris scan, and finger print technology employed for driver's license/state I.D. card. The license/I.D. would be tied to a National registry using the same number. No number no vote! We absolutely must save our elections from fraud and mischief and start protecting ourselves from illegals trying to jin up the system to get more payola.

Agreed! You have to have more ID to pawn jewelry than you do to vote.

I find it hard to believe. At least from my experience. I am a Republican Volunteer here in Maine. We have to first ask if they have registered to vote or have you received your absentee ballot in the mail depending on which dept. you are working. Then you ask if they would like to register or if they have filled out the ballot respectively. After you get that information THEN you ask if they are going to support G.W. and or other candidates that are running for various offices.
