ROCKLAND (Jan 16, 2004): Rockland Mayor Edward Mazurek has announced his candidacy for new Maine House of Representatives District 47 against incumbent Rep. Deb McNeil (R-Rockland).

Rockland was formerly alone in House District 62. The city is joining a small portion of Owls Head as District 47, after the districts were reapportioned last summer.

Mazurek will run as a Democrat against the three-term incumbent McNeil, a Republican. He is currently in his second year as mayor, after earning election to the Rockland City Council in 2001.

A former football coach at Rockland District High School and MSAD 5 teacher, Mazurek has four children and four grandchildren in Rockland.

He has served on the city's planning commission, zoning board of appeals and recreation committee.

In a press release issued Friday, Mazurek said he wants to take his local experience to Augusta, and "continue to work and fight for Rockland" in the Legislature.

If elected, Mazurek said, he would put Rockland into the majority and give the city a stronger voice on the state level.

The mayor is keying on tax and educational reform issues, and transportation and economic development issues, as the planks of his campaign platform.

"Rockland needs a committed and experienced voice in Augusta for all this important work," Mazurek said.

This is one of the races to watch in Maine. Republicans are already a few seats down in the house and Coach Maz is a strong candidate.

Still, Deb McNeil's pretty popular, so it'll be interesting to watch.
