LOL. Not entirely true; but, sometimes it seems that way.
The position I always found myself in was that we would have 1 or maybe two people for every department in the store. One stocking and one waiting on customers on the floor or at checkouts. When they called everyone available off the floor, the person remaining had to choose between chasing customers, watching their department registers and stocking/cleaning. All of it had to get done. If it wasn't done through the regular hours, it had to be done after your shift ended. If you went over on hours, you couldn't have overtime, so you had to cut hours late in the week. There were times when there was only one person to a department period. Some didn't even have that. But the store was raking in profits - swimming in them. The store I worked in, the manager had a guy walk around the store on the main track asking people if he could assist them just so the appearance would be there that help was there to be had.
The employees are underpaid and get attacked from all sides.
It is no wonder most of them look pretty haggered. They get pushed constantly by every level of management, by checkout managers, etc, then have to play ambassador to the customer excusing themselves for not having enough help on hand when they are not the responsible party and are most times just as upset about it. Management always has an excuse why they can't have more help onhand - usually it is their own bonuses.. Any of this sound familiar? LOL
