I've been checking out the Dell catalog, as I'm looking to buy a new computer, soon, and the Dell Dimension 2400 looks pretty good to me, and it's only $500. It has the following (Note that I'm a fairly computer illiterate guy, so I don't know what much of this means. I just know it's better than the computer I have, now):

- Intel Celeron Processor at 2.20 GHz
- 128MB Shared DDR SDRAM at 266MHz
- 40GB ATA/100 Value Hard Drive (5400 RPM)
- 17" E773 Monitor
- Integrated Intel 3D Extreme Graphics
- 48x CD-ROM Drive
- Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
- Altec Lansing ADA 215 Speakers

Like I said, only $500 (I plan on getting one with a flat-screen monitor, which'll run $700, instead). Just a thought. Here's the Dell number, in case you want to ask for a catalog or ask some other questions. 1-800-576-3355. Hope that helps.

What fascinates me, is that I wrote "call Dell" and it appears that most other posters so far have also said "Dell."

Kind of strange, being in the majority. . . .

That choice of yours is good, except for one thing. With WindowsXP you will be a lot happier with 256 or even 512 Megs of main memory. 128 megs will end up using the hard drive a great deal for virtual memory, and you will think the machine is slow, but it will be only short of memory.

2 things there jump out at me-
#1 that's not a good choice of HD, at 5400 it's slow and practically obsolete.
#2 Intel integrated 3D graphics are terrible.
Also, nowadays 256 MB ram should be standard. 128 is just enough to run XP, never mind today's applications (bloatware).

Someone told me that the Celeron chip wasn't as great as the Atheon chip.

I just bought the same machine yesterday for my brother-in-law but with a P4 256MB Ram, Floppy, 15" Flat panel and and extra CD r/RW for 767.00 including tax and shipping. Check the Deals and Prices, your paying too much and the extra $67 is worth it.

If you can get a hold of the Dell business catalogue, their prices are even lower. I'm not sure if you have to have the PC's sent to a business address.
