What's going on with Free Republic?

When I click on the word "Free Republic," at the top of the screen, a window pops up asking me to approve a file download from FR. What is this all about?

You've got a trojan on your system. Get Ad-Aware and clean that stuff out.

What's the download? Perhaps your browser's not set to display .html in the browser? Hard to tell.

I got this error this morning as well. I went to "Internet Options", and did a "clear history" and "delete all files", then everything worked.

I have a wonderful little free program called SpyBot that works great on removing sneaky files. Another good one is RegCleaner --- obviously to clean your registry of any bad guys --- also free.

There's been a couple of times in two years that images that were supposed to load up somehow acted like a file download. There have also been times I was in the cache, trying to open image files in another window, and they acted like downloads.
I'd first off clean out the cache and all useless cookies.
I'd also suggest SpyBot, the latest version is 1.2
http://security.kolla.de/ Also use Hijack This ( adirect download link, by the way):
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip Hijack This can create a startup list that might reveal some problems, that you can copy and paste and some of us can help look it over. Look under Config>Misc Tools.

That did the trick! Thanks so much. I was scared that FR had been hacked or something.

If you're talking about the same one I have (4.3 build 780) then sadly it's no longer free.
http://www.jv16.org/ You might still find it with a Google search or on ZDNet maybe?
