The scene with the Mouth of Sauron was indeed filmed. In fact, it was re-shot again this summer, as Ian McKellen and a few others mentioned, and indeed, throwing down the mithril shirt is indeed in it. The Mouth of Sauron will have very heavy make up, and his most bizarre and frightening feature will be a vertical mouth.

??? Surely you jest?

I must be doin' something right. There aren't too many people jumpin' into this fray!

Now it thinks it is too intimidating to argue with.... jeesh.... "delusional" doesn't begin to say it!

Notice the delusional logic: "must be doing something right" because "there aren't too many people jumpin' into this fray!".

This is sort of like the kid who roles around in pigshit and dares anyone to "take him on!"; when no one answers his challenge because they don't want to roll around in the mud and pigshit with him, he concludes that "I'm the greatest! Because no one dares to challenge me!".

The truely pathetic never realize just how pathetic they really are.

Anyway, J.R.R. Tolkien and many other distinguished scholars have already discredited this ridiculous "escapism" accusation; in any case Tolkien's writings are no more "escapist" than those of Shakespeare or your latest Hollywood shoot-em-up movie (arguably Hollywood is more "escapist" than Tolkien), yet no one accuses Shakespeare aficiandos or movie goers of "escapism".

Frankly, given the tripe that passes for most Hollywood entertainment, "escape" from this pop culture isn't a crime or "silly", it's a moral imperative!

I can't find mention of this rumor, only this pic of a normal horizonal mouth:

I hope it is a false rumor or that someone is pulling your leg.

That is a very old picture indeed. I know for a fact that the scenes were reshot this summer, but the rumor about the "vertical mouth" came from someone would who is unlikely to make up stories like this, but where she heard or read this from, I do not know, I assume it was a contributor to TORN, since she reads most of the emails they get. If you like, I'll try and ask her more about it again.

Don't trouble yourself. We'll know for sure in two months time. If it is true, I don't want to spend the next two months fretting over it. I'm going to have to trust that PJ knows what he is doing, ie, that if this "innovation" doesn't work, he won't put it in the movie. I hope.

I didn't even notice the score for the first two. At least I don't remember a damn thing about it. A far cry from something classic like Conan or Star Wars.

Sorry, my bad, I got the Witch King mixed up with the Mouth of Sauron (who will have a vertical style mouth), but the Witch King still looks good to me!

Last-minute Rings filming

14 October 2003
By BESS MANSON

Filming for The Return of the King continues, six weeks out from its world premiere in Wellington.

But executive producer Mark Ordesky of New Line Cinema says the film is on schedule and will be ready for its December 1 debut.

Last night Mr Ordesky said miniatures and visual effects were still being shot and added to the movie, which is being edited in Britain. Filming of principal actors was complete.

Shooting would continue next year for the extended DVD version, which is expected to be out for November 2004. It was unlikely principal actors would return for more filming, though some of the cast could be recalled to record dialogue for the DVD.

Mr Ordesky, a friend of director Peter Jackson since the late 1980s, said he had every confidence most of the principal cast would turn out for the premiere. These actors include Cate Blanchett, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen and Sir Ian McKellen, none of whom attended the earlier premieres. "I believe . . . the turnout for The Return of the King will eclipse the turnout for The Two Towers."

Though he had not inspected the Embassy Theatre, Mr Ordesky was confident refurbishment was going to plan. "It will just be spectacular."

Last year Mr Ordesky said Wellington would lose the premiere if the theatre were not brought up to standard. His comments followed Wellington City Council's decision, later revoked, to withdraw its $7 million backing for renovations.

Mr Ordesky met Jackson in 1987 when he tried to buy Jackson's film Bad Taste for the American company he was working for. It did not happen, but he did hire the director to write an instalment for Nightmare on Elm Street. (The script was never shot).

In those days no smart hotel rooms were offered to Jackson and he ended up sleeping on Mr Ordesky's sofa. "And since then I have slept on his."

Mr Ordesky has moved up the ranks in New Line due, in part, to the success of the Rings films. Having started as a script reader – the most junior position – he now has the wordy title of executive vice-president and chief operating officer.

New Zealand has become a second home to Mr Ordesky, who has made about 30 round trips in five years. He is amazed and pleased at the phenomenon of the first two Rings films.

"They have defied even our optimistic expectations. That's a credit to Peter Jackson, (joint scriptwriter) Fran Walsh ... the entire New Zealand crew and the cast. It's been a miracle ... a gift."

The Witch King ain't The Mouth of Sauron.

And no mouth, vertical or horizontal, is visible.

I'll wait and see.

Ooops; should have read the whole thread before posting.

Which old witch? The wicked witch? The Witch King? That King? Witch King?

I wonder why he's wearing that crown/helmet thingie instead of the crown he's wearing in FOTR, assuming that's the Witch King shown in FOTR, and not one of the other Nazgul.

In FOTR we see him in the Ring-world, he isnt actually wearing that crown in reality, only through Frodo's eyes. This helmet/crown seems to be the "real" one.

Ah. That does make sense. Looks like they're modeling him on the Alan Lee painting, of the Witch King/Eowyn fight, which shows him wearing a "helm" like that. I think the book describes it more like a crown, but my memory is a bit unclear on that.
