Does anyone ever talk about what it's like to be a part of the crew that produces these failures? You have to guess that somebody pours their heart into these things, only to watch it blow up in their faces. Still, the stories would probably make a fantastic book!

Depends on who the "crew" is. Much of the blame can be placed on the director, screenwriter, and editor of these films and maybe the producer who brings them all together.

John Travolta has been in good films and he has been in crap. The presence of John Travolta does not necessarily doom a movie but from what I've heard (I never saw it) Battlefield Earth had a lot of problems that couldn't be blamed on the cast or people working behind the scenes. Travolta produced it and he can be blamed for that.

To some of the crew, it is just another job. Stanley Kubrick used even the same camera operators on a number of his films. They might have felt some appriciation of the work but if they disagreed with Stanley, I don't know that they bothered to voice their two cents - it's his film.
