Chicks to break with country scene
The Dixie Chicks say they don't want to be a country music band any more.
Violinist Martie Maguire told Spiegel magazine: "We don't feel part of the country scene any longer, it can't be our home any more."
She said she was disappointed other country singers didn't back up the Dixie Chicks in their criticism of George W Bush's politics on Iraq.
"A few weeks ago, Merle Haggard said a couple of nice words about us, but that was it," Maguire complained.
"The support we got came from others, like Bruce Springsteen."
Going home empty-handed from the Country Awards ceremony also made them decide to break with the scene, Maguire said.
"Instead, we won three Grammys against much stronger competition.
"So we now consider ourselves part of the big Rock 'n' Roll family."

Somehow Merle Haggard turned into a liberal over the last 20 years. I have heard that he no longer sings "The Fightin Side of Me." He recently mentioned he was ignorant at the time he wrote it. Big surprise he supports the Dixie Chicks.

Pseudo intellectuals enjoy "feeling" they have studied a subject, and therefore have come to the correct conclusion.
Merle Haggard was right the first time, when he was at his peak.
"You're walking on the fighting side of me, running down a way of life our fighting men have fought and died to keep.If you dont love it, leave it, let this song that I'm singing be a warning-When your running down a country man, you're walking on the fighting side of me.
He may not sing that song anymore, but I will proudly recite it to him,and everyone, and remind him that what was true then, is still true now.
That he became a drunk and a druggie because the world laughed at him for his songs, doesnt mean his songs were wrong.
It just means he lost his muse when he started believing his comeback press releases.
Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater!

Dixie Chicks to break with country scene...The sound of career desparation. Hated 'em before, hate'm in their new middle-aged fat incarnation.

They aren't pretty enough for pop. Also, Maines doesn't have a voice for Rock 'N' Roll. I'd be amazed if the Rock 'N' Roll stations played them. I think it's funny that the fake image has finally been shed, now they can go and create a new fake image. Please, somebody teach these girls what integrity means. I would also love it if they could write their own songs for a change. I guess they won't have Nashville's writers to use anymore. In Rock 'N' Roll, you're expected to write your own music and the fiddle isn't in to many Rock songs. Bye, Bye, Bye, Vichy witches.

I'd say their negative charisma won't help them be the second. The King is so beyond them, it's painful. They are lucky that Nashville writers are talented. Truth be told, if they wrote their own lyrics, no one would like them. They don't get average people and what makes them tick, they are tuned into nihilistic, loudmouth, vulgar narcissistic bs. They have merely been wearing down home country drag all these years.

Roger that, but the girl can sing....

It wasn't the Chicks antiwar stance that screwed them, it was the ad hominem nature of their comments. Also, I think being antiwar was an afterthought. They were merely pandering to an Anti-American Brit crowd. When the heat came, they tried to dress up their overseas gutless pandering by spewing boilerplate antiwar bs (basically reading off the average Hardball transcript.) I think they probably even had a Dem consultant tell them what to say, the big guns were probably called in. I suspect they will be appearing at the DNC convention in Beantown next year. They are clearly being advised to go totally Left--they figure they lost their base and the Republicans (oddly they didn't know that there is a large overlap there).
The anti-Schwarzenegger comments are a hint of what's to come-- washed up performances at DNC functions in an attempt to get the Norman Lears of the world to bulk buy their CDs like they did Franken's incopherent, unhinged
book.

Does this mean that they'll start kissing each other on stage?Probably not, but I think they'll look damn stupid scratching up record albums on turntables and wearing hip hop garb while making those ignorant spitting sounds into mikes held against their lips.

Yes they can kiss each other on stage. It will be good for thier career. Then, they will have to get multiple body piercings and tatoos and start wearing sleazy outfits and color thier hair many different colors. This way they can fit into the acid rock crowd.

by the way, and I'm not blaming the poster for this, but this article is false and misleading.
It's not true that "The Dixie Chicks say they don't want to be a country music band any more."
I looked up the original interview, and it's pretty clear that the Chicks were saying that the country music scene abandoned them - that they don't have a home there anymore (no news there).
They did say that they consider themselves part of the "rock & roll" community, though I'd have to assume that what they were refering to would be better described as the "pop music" community (no news there also - Shania Twain, Faith Hill, LeAnn Rimes and other country artists also have wide cross-over appeal.)
In other words, this article is, well, a piece of crap. As usual, I'm disappointed that I often seem to be the only Freeper who doesn't beleive everything he reads. Again, I'm not blaming the original poster for this - but I would like to see a little skepticism once in a while in those replying. This is the internet, you know, and you can't believe everything you read - I'd like to think we all would know that.

I think Merle's statement was nothing more than a "They have a right to say what they want" type of statement. I don't believe he supported the content of the statement, unless there is more I have not heard.

I am sure that fiddle will go over real well in the rock scene Martie.
