Not necessarily a virus. It could be a hard drive failure.

That's what it sounds like to me. Bad drive or bad IDE controller. I'd blow put the insides first.

I hope you have a good back up of your data.
Time for a new hard drive. Also, check your motherboard for blown or swelling capacitors.
But first, if you get the thing running, back up your data.

Thanks for all the quick responses. Are hard drives expensive?

If I might borrow this thread for a sec. My old box started not recognising floopy, D drive, mouse or keyboard. Had to go into safe mode and remove them in device manager, then it would install them and run until the next start up. Motherboard problem?

50 to 300 dollars, depending on how much storage space you'de like, and how fast of a drive you need.

Not really. You can get them for a good deal on Ebay. And next time be sure to back up the contents of your entire hard drive to a CD so you can just boot it up on a new one without having to reinstall everything. There's where Norton Ghost comes in handy in a situation like this.

Do as goldstategop says, get a ghosting program. IIRC it will allow you to hook up both HD's at the same time and copy EVERYTHING from the old disk to the new one and you won't have to reload any of the programs.

But first, if you get the thing running, back up your data. Better idea - rather than risk corrupting the drive further, pull it out and connect it to another computer, if you have one handy or can borrow one for a while. Then you can scarf everything off of it for backup purposes by using the new machine. Plus, if the drive works fine in a new computer, you know that the porblem isn't the drive, but the motherboard on the old machine, probably the integrated IDE controller...

Norton Ghost . But if you're afraid of losing data, your local computer stop tech can back up the data for you for a nominal fee.

Can you boot from a floopy at all? Make a bootable floppy, and try to come up in a DOS session.
Sounds like the OS is corrupted, and the drivers for the devices. Usually when the hardware is broken, it stays broken. Hard to say, in this case.
You might try re-installing the OS from the CD and perhaps that will solve it, but no promises.

No zip...I do have a burner.

Okay, then what you need to do is burn your son's courses to CD(s). Programs can be reinstalled. Data, when lost, is lost. Burn anything that you save and feel that you will need later.

I kept playing with it till it did eat the OS and wouldn't boot, it asked for the boot floppy. Since it won't recognise the floopy drive I can't reinstall. Old slot 1 board anyway, guess I just got some extra parts. :-)
