Finally got time to answer this - I plan to rent the theatrical twice between now & the release of the director's cut, just to tide me over. I'd have to watch it 5 times to break even on buying it, and the only way I'll have 15 spare hours between now and November is if I am in traction.

One of the highlights of the Thanksgiving celebration, which I intend to snatch from my mother-in-law this year, will be the seven-hour extravaganza of the director's cuts of both FOTR and TTT.
