Breast-Feeding Driver Appeals To Higher Authority

Husband Says Only He Can Punish Wife

POSTED: 8:55 a.m. EDT August 6, 2003 UPDATED: 12:35 p.m. EDT August 6, 2003

RAVENNA, Ohio -- A woman arrested for breast-feeding while driving is appealing to a higher authority.

Catherine Nicole Donkers says she wants the Bible to be the law, when she goes on trial Wednesday.

She was busted in May when a truck driver called 911 to report that he had seen a woman driving her car with a baby in her lap on the Ohio Turnpike.

Donkers doesn't deny she was nursing her baby on the Ohio Turnpike, but contends she was improperly charged. She and her common-law husband are members of the First Christian Fellowship for Eternal Sovereignty -- an organization founded in Henderson, Nev., in the 1990s. It pledges allegiance to Jesus Christ and at times takes a dim view of government authority and believe it's wrong to require people to have legal documents.

Donkers faces charges including endangering her 7-month-old daughter.

When talking about the case, Donkers and Brad Lee Barnhill refer to their membership in their religion. Barnhill says he's a minister with 650 followers, Donkers is his wife and only he can punish her.

In court filings, the couple says neither has a Social Security number or driver's license and they don't have a marriage license either -- because they don't believe the government has the right to require such documents.

"I'm not required to get permission from the government to marry," Donkers said.

Previously, Barnhill, 46, appeared on "Good Morning America" and said religious beliefs put him in charge of his wife's actions, so he wants to be the one to go on trial.

In court filings, the couple said they think it's wrong to be required to have driver's licenses and they do not have a marriage license, although they said they are husband and wife.

Barnhill said, "Just like we don't need permission to get married, why should I need permission from the state to use my property on the road?"

A conviction for misdemeanor child endangering carries maximum penalties of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Has she (or he, I guess, because she's not allowed to speak) starting complaining about the fringe on the flag in the courtroom yet?

In case he doesn't hang around here anymore Here is the link to the thread he was on about the same incident. He gave more detail about his wife's reasons for doing what she did.

I guarantee that you will be entertained for as long as you can slog through the thread Honeygrl links. It is the most incredible outrageous pseudo-conservative-Christian behavior ever, and I seem to remember laughing myself sick at times too.

"Good because I want to know why he is wating my tax dollars on his legalistic onanism. "

See my link in post #22. That thread is where he was defending his wife. Apparently, she had been raped or sexually harrassed or something by a LEO before so was told not to stop until she was in a public place. (which sounded reasonable to me regarding her not stopping right away for the cop until she got to the public area where she did stop) He explained the rest as well, but I don't remember it well. Something about her being on her way to a hearing or trial or something against on of the LEOs who'd done that to her i think and she couldn't be late... I forget.. the other thread has it all though. Technically, from what I read of the laws on that thread, you are allowed to remove a baby from a carseat to "tend to basic needs" which include nursing the baby. I didn't see anything in the law specifying that it couldn't be the driver doing it either. It's likely a law they'll have to make more specific after this though.

"If he just came here to get in on the one discussion I'd hardly call him a FReeper. There's DUmmies post here too, and they are hardly FReepers. "

You are right. When I went back to look for his username, I saw his signon date was the same day as the story was discussed. I didn't realize that when I made the comment though. He didn't post the article himself though, he just came to defend his wife when he found everyone trashing her here. Honestly, after reading the discussion with him, I understood her reasoning in what she did, but still think they are a bit looney in their religious beliefs. They are a very tin foil hat bunch.

"Go buy your own road to drive on, loon! "

I think he meant his property being his own car.

Just for the record though: I'm not defending what she did, I just understood it a bit once i read the stuff on the thread he was on. I can't imagine being able to breastfeeding and drive myself. I can barely manage driving while talking on my cell phone and holding a cigarette while going 70 in a 45 zone...adding a latched on baby to that equation would kill us all. :)

I would threaten to stop the car and come back there, but it might look improper for me to be in the backseat with you in a parked car...

And who said he didn't? The property may indeed be the car, and who cares when he drives his own property on his own road. But he wants to drive it on a public road, which is regulated with valid, Constitutional laws regarding the operation of motor vehicles. He wants all the rights without any of the responsibilities, and hence he is just another whiney, self-centered liberal.

Well, according to ohioturnpike.org:

"The maintenance, operation and security of the Ohio Turnpike are funded almost exclusively through tolls - NOT TAXES. Your taxes pay for other roads and interstates, not the Turnpike. The Ohio Turnpike receives NO federal funding and only a small portion of state tax ($. 05 per gallon from gasoline purchased ONLY at service stations on the Turnpike.) (Note: The small portion of state tax money received by the Turnpike Commission is specifically allocated to the maintenance and repairs of the bridges and overpasses that are state routes.) "

So it's not a road that your taxes pay for unless you actually use that road and buy gas on it.

I'm disappointed we couldn't go to the trial. I'd love to be sitting in the courtroom, trying to surpress my titters.

Sorry, boss, but my Rosicrucian Magick is out to the cleaners and my wife is currently using my Templar Magick. Will Illuminatus Magick do? I don't want to use my Bilderberger stuff because the cost per minute is prohibitive unless this is an in-State magical attack ... and you know the Higher-ups will hassle me about my vouchers again and then probably still won't pay up.

Besides, it's Thursday and I can get a really good deal on Illuminatus Magick ...
