Just don't expect the United States of America to remain strong........when "OUR" politicians have sold us out.......and are still selling us out...so the FEW.......can reap their so called rewards.

The politicians have nothing to do with American businesses trying to remain globally competitive.

In a global economy, everyone has to compete, globally. We've proven we can, in the past.

Instead of whining, maybe you ought to be focusing on the unique value you can bring to what you're doing now.

A dollar a day is nothing in the US. It might be a good wage in some other country. What's the point?

If you do not think 1 dollar per day is slave labor.

Although your statement has a populist appeal, it is absolutely meaningless without knowing the economics of the country or region where the $1 per hour is paid such as the type of work for which the $1 per hour is earned; the relative wages in the country or region for unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled, and professional labor; and the cost of living in the country or region. Call me what you want, but your rant proves nothing and advocates even less.

"...we could all get a job, if we were willing to work". I believe you have the answer without realizing it. We used to start at the bottom and work our way to the top. Today, unless some can start at the top, they would rather not work. Many young Americans have a distorted view of their worth in the workforce. They feel "unappreciated and unchellanged" if they don't get the job they THINK they want. After all, that's what their mommies and daddies are telling them. What kind of job is a person with a degree in African-American studies qualified to do? Or, how about a degree in woman's studies? And we used to laugh at a degree in basket weaving!

The funny thing about the "high" unemployment in the US, is that it spurs people out of the "I gotta have a job" mentality, and puts them into the "I'm gonna create my own job" mentality. Take control of your destiny any way you can.

Well said. Many people will argue that the jobs lost are those of "union thugs." Well, not all manufacturing people are union and further not all people in unions are brainwashed liberals. Further, manufactuing jobs were just the begining, IT , Engineering and others are already being sold out to China, India and so on.

There's plenty of work to do. That's not the same as plenty of jobs but it COULD BE.

Ask anyone who's had a digital camera break and tried to find someone to fix it. Someone local. Someone who could do it for $75/hour or even more, so long as it didn't have to spend a month in the mail and sitting at the factory waiting to be fixed.

There is no shortage of work and no shortage of people willing to pay to have it done. What IS missing is training.

Many corporations have found ways to lock up the market for repairs for their products. It used to be if you owned something and it broke, you could find someone to fix it at a price mutually agreeable. Now, you frequently cannot find trained service at any price. If you need the thing, you can't wait for factory service, which is often outrageous.

There are millions of potential enterpreneurs in this country who could be earning good money, spending good money, and getting this economy out of its doldrums. But what is happening instead is that we're buying from overseas to get the cheapest price, because we know that when it breaks out of warranty we will just be replacing it.

So everybody loses--the companies that end up losing business to cheaper overseas competitors, who all make crap because that way you have to buy it again. People who can't get jobs. People who can't get their things fixed, especially locally.

This goes for everything reasonably high-tech. IMAGINE if plumbing stuff was updated every couple of years so that if something broke, you had to replace the whole thing because the new part wouldn't work with the old. Image if the plumbing materal manufacturers had a monopoly on repair of their products, and you couldn't hire a local plumber who knew how to fix your leaky toilet.

Think about it.
