Recently the RIAA announced that it would peruse the prosecution of persons using P2P networks to download copyright music. These lawsuits involve mainly those persons that use Kazza and Grogster software.
Scams have now been reported involving E-mail and phone calls threatening lawsuits if a certain amount of money is not paid to the person calling or emailing.
The E-mail usually contains a look alike RIAA logo and a post office box in the E-mail message. The return addy is sometimes in Europe and/or the Southern USA. They both claim to be lawyers for RIAA.
The E-mail will tell you that you have been caught downloading copyrighted music, pictures or text within the last two years and you will go to jail.
The phone caller (most are female) will say the same and both will ask for you to settle out of court and will ask you for any account number you have at your bank or credit card numbers. Most are asking for $50 dollars or less. DO NOT GIVE ANY INFO ABOUT YOURSELF!
If you receive one of these E-mails or phone calls, do not respond.
If it's a phone call, hang up!
If you receive an E-mail, do not respond, save it. Contact your ISP for emails and your local FBI agency immediately.
For phone calls contact your local FBI and phone company.
