Galveston wisely built a 17 ft. high seawall in 1960.
Most folks outside of this area don't realize that the worst natural disaster in U.S. history occurred in 1900, when a powerful hurricane (no names back then) with a 15-20 ft. storm surge struck Galveston Island and left between 6,000 and 10,000 dead (most of the bodies never found - washed out to sea).
