Recumbent bicyles are a style to reduce the amount of air resistance the bike and rider create at higher speeds: above 15 mph, air resistance is the vast majority of the load a rider faces (80 percent at over 22 mph!). The lower sitting position reduces air drag of both bike and rider, and good recumbents with fairings can easily go on flat roads at over 40 mph. Record runs are over 55-60 mph, but very few real riders go that fast.
They are limited by gear ratios to slower speeds going uphill obviously.
Laundry?
I am prohibitted from doing the laundry, or even entering the laundry room. When the Ronnie is on vacation, she doesn't do laundry either.
