What is a Hate Crime?

The woman who hit the man who was lodged in her windshield until he died in her garage is black and told her friends she hit a 'white' man. Does this qualify as a hate crime? She was a nurses aid, she was high on drugs and booze, he was a white homeless man and she knew he was white and he was not dead. Was it hate that lead her to leave a 'white' man to die in her garage while she made love to her boyfriend in the house? Would she have gotten help for a black man?
If she had been white and the homeless man black would it have been a hate crime? Would Jesse Jackson have anything to say about it?
Is this a great country or what?

This one was very close to being a hate crime, but not quite. Had it read...
The woman who hit the man who was lodged in her windshield until he died in her garage is black white and told her friends she hit a 'white' 'black' man.
Do you see the difference now?

Now I see, Actually I never learned of the racial overtones until just the other day and the story has been reported for months. Seems the press did not think it was all that important that he was white and she kept calling him the 'white guy stuck in my windshield'.
Wonder what the people from her church had to say?

You will not succeed in getting rid of the stupid 'hate crime' idea by insisting that 'hate crime' statutes are applied in more cases than they are now. You only manage to make this embarassment to our body of laws even more 'mainstream'.

Hate had nothing to do with it. Use of controlled substance is the issue, as is lack of personal responsibility.

Agreed. This woman was out of her mind on drugs and booze. If it was a black homeless guy she would have probably have acted even more impersonally.
Not a hate crime, just stupidty, too many substances and a who gives a damn attitude.
