LIPTON ICED TEA DIXIE CHICKS ADS PULLED

Unilever Says It Will Continue Running Current Spots June 19, 2003 QwikFIND ID: AAO77M By Hillary Chura

BOSTON (AdAge.com) -- An ad for Lipton Iced Tea that features the Dixie Chicks is being pulled, according to people familiar with the situation. The country music group's lead singer in March during a concert was made comments critical of President Bush in the days leading up to the country's war with Iraq.

No comment A spokeswoman for Unilever, which jointly markets Lipton with PepsiCo in the Pepsi-Lipton Tea Partnership, would not comment on why the Dixie Chicks ad is not running but said, "Lipton has a number of different advertising and promotional plans in the works and has opted for now to run the commercials that currently are on air."

It's uncertain when or if the ad will run. The ads were to have debuted in May to coincide with the group's first world tour in three years.

Three current 30-second spots, which focus on getting back to a healthy way of living, started running in May in the slots designated for the Dixie Chicks ad, according to one person familiar with the situation. The person said the ads were rushed into production after comments made by Natalie Maines, the group's lead singer, caused a furor among some country music fans.

Texas dustup In a concert in England just prior to the start of the war in Iraq, Ms. Maines told the crowd: "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." The group is also from Texas. Radio stations organized boycotts, and Ms. Maine's later issued an apology

J. Walter Thompson Co., New York, produced the Dixie Chicks ads as well as those on air now. The decision not to run the ad has had no effect on the Lipton's sponsorship of the Grammy-winning group's "Top of the World Tour." The plan was for the tour was to offer Lipton a portable integrated marketing opportunity that would have included an associated Lipton Iced Tea TV spot.

PepsiCo and JWT, part of WPP Group, did not return calls for comment.

Lipton Iced Tea spent $2.9 million in measured media last year, according to TNS Media Intelligence/ CMR.

>>"The same communists and socialists who were in charge fifty years ago are no longer in charge either. But that doesn't mean the idea is dead. "

Optimistic aren't we?

I can't help to think that the current U.S. Administration is able or at least willing to turn things around.

Are they doing everything right? - NO
I certainly have problems with some of their decisions. However, they at least have the potential to move the world back to a more stable and positive direction. It won't be today and they have many battles at home to fight just to get to the point where they can make a change.

BTW, 50 years ago communism and socialism weren't proven utter failures that we recognize today. Those ideas are not dead. But they are coughing up blood.

Some people are willing to accept a corrupt governments OK as a reason to kill.

You are either in denial or you think that we are incapable of knowing a liberal when we see one.

Talking with you is like talking to a three year old who isn't getting their way.

It's a waste of time and effort.

Enjoy yourself , it appears you have a good grip on things..............

The "current" administration is persuing the same ends as the elites they work for have persued for decades.

"Single acts of tyranny may be ascribed to the accidental opinion of a day. But a series of oppressions , begun at a distinguished period , and pursued unalterably through every change of ministers ( administrations ) , too plainly proves a deliberate systematic plan of reducing us to slavery."

Thomas Jefferson

Put a different face in the Whore House and give it a different name and the people will swallow it.

Hitler said "Tell a lie long enough and people will believe it."

American's are free , American's are free , American's are free.

Could I borrow your red slippers , its just not working for me...

America , land of Free Speech ( unless someone doesn't like what you have to say ). Does FREEDOM really ring in America , or is it just a myth?

Free speech? Here's the 1st Amendment:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Please tell me what you see in there that requires any of the following:

1. My purchase of iced tea.
2. My purchase of concert tickets
3. My purchase of compact discs
4. My self-censoring my own disagreement with the Chick's stand on the war.
5. Lipton's continuing their business relationship with the Chicks in the exact same form it was before the war.

First it was the Christian's then the Dixie Chicks , you better hope you are not next to realize your economic restraints...

Why don't you go knock on the door of Cassie Bernall's parents and ask them whther the Dixie Chicks are being persecuted just like the Christians. Or better yet, go to a house church in China and ask about it.

For Pete's sake, get informed.

You don't suppose that half the reason for dropping them is that Lipton took one look at that fat pig of a lead singer and decided that she promoted a "healty way of living" about as well as the late John Belushi?

She's not so big really, she just looks chubby standing next to those two Doublemint Twins (Thank you, Dennis Miller). Plus, when they were nude on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, everybody knew Natalie had been airbrushed to heck and gone because her belly looked like it came off of Britney Spears.

No matter who owns the companies, if we boycott products made by Americans we are hurting Americans the most. If it says "product of France" on it, boycott it like a rented mule.

I for one, love the Dixie Chicks. Ya'll are too caught up in the rhetoric. they are very patriotic and support our troops. That's good enough for me.

You must be smoking your iced tea leaves. Slamming the leader of your nation in a public venue in a foreign nation is considered to be patriotic? Your sense of values are very warped indeed.

Not mentioning the ones you are losing with a trumped up War on Terrorism.

Trumped up? They tried to kill 50,000 of us in one day! Were you asleep?

Seeings how I see Jesus Christ and only Jesus Christ as my Lord

Right now I'm thinking of your comment about going to war in Iraq, in this thread, post #2:

Hermann Goering said :

"Why of course the people don't want war. Voice or no voice , the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked , and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.

If we controlled our schools this would be common knowledge , but that wouldn't serve our masters........

I’m also thinking about that mass grave they found in Iraq last week. It had about 200 little Kurdish kids in it, buried alive. Some of them were found still holding their dolls. Would the Jesus you present have made any effort to stop or punish that sort of thing or would he be too busy chewing Dubya out for fighting the war on terror in the first place? Would he tell us we're Nazis because we took down a regime that trained hijackers and suicide bombers? You use the words "trumped up" to describe the war that started with Osama's baoys dropping 2 kilotons of combat power into lower Manhattan on a Tuesday morning in an effort to kill 50,000 people. Would your Jesus think it's a trumped up war, too, that those 200 Kurdish kids are just the collateral damage we have to accept for being special-nice-nice-Christians to the torturers of this world?

Amazing he is, the false bootlicker Jesus that some Christians present these days. He whomps moneychangers but lets torturers and terrorists carry on with his tacit blessing.
