Why would anyone drink Corona beer?
Posted on 06/06/2003 9:17:54 AM PDT by its gilligan
Why would anyone drink Corona Beer? I mean Mexico is not exactly known for producing quality beer in the first place. Yet this is like the dregs of Mexican brews. Its the Old Milwaukee of Mexican Beers. A poor Mexcian farm worker would probably just as soon drink his own urine as drink this concoction. The fact that you need to put a piece of fruit in the bottle to get it down should tell you something. Yet people here pay $7 a six pack for this stuff.
Well, I think I know who drinks it. It's the freepers! You see, at the end of the month when the workmen's comp check comes in, the freeper wants to impress the other freepers in the trailer park. So instead of the usual case of Busch, he goes out and buys some "imported beer." He then walks around the trailer park in his best stained undershirt with his Corona in hand and the other freepers think, "WOW WHAT CLASS!"
This has got to be it. Nobody who posts at DU would drink this stuff.

I actually don't like Mexican beer because it's too much like German beer (i.e., they lager their beers, rather than fermenting them as God intended, at 60-65º F).

The idiot who posted this is a true representative of DU....Ignorant or just plain stupid, either way that is no way to go through life.
I will give him credit in knowing Corona is considered the bottom of the barrel beer in Mexico. Unfortunately, what he fails to truly understand is that when I worked in Manhattan (the Land of Left Wing Liberals) they guzzled this beer with their limes-non stop. So much for this ignorant idiots insight on who drinks it. I guarantee this guy is into cosmopolitans.

You're right: Corona is swill. As a Texan and an American of German ancestry, I take beer seriously (but not too seriously; it's still only beer) and have prepared the following "equivalence guide" for our non-expert readers.
Corona = Budweiser
Corona Lite = Bud Lite
Tecate = Schlitz / PBR
Modelo = Miller
Chihuahua = Schaefer / Carling
(I don't drink Pacifica or Carta Blanca.)
Negro Modelo is a decent Mexican dark lager; if you gotta drink Mexican beer, it's a good choice. Tecate with lime is okay, too, but is thin and foamy, and thus really only suitable for drinking after mowing the yard, etc. Most Mexican beers are brewed for American tastes, anyway (i.e. they're thin and foamy); if you just want a cold one, Schlitz is good, cheap, and (despite the fact that it's "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous") is brewed in Texas -- in San Antonio, by the Joseph Pabst Brewing Company. Save money; support beer made in the USA; drink Schlitz!
(Now, if you want GOOD beer, have a Shiner instead. It's still brewed by the Spoetzl Company in Shiner, Texas.)
My preferred beers are: Schlitz (cheap), Shiner (company), and Warsteiner lager (special treat). I also like Huber (Bock), Old Style (I know, I know), Guinness, Chimay ales, and most ciders, plus many local/microbrews -- but we're discussing mass-market beer here.
Only Padre Island frat boys and lawyers drink Corona. Avoid it like the plague.

Dos Eques dark is decent Mexican beer. I'll drink Corona sometimes. As far as the cost? Don't care.
As far as trailers parks, etc? Hate to break this to you but Freepers can buy/sell anyone at DU.

Thanks for the ping.
However, with the lack of support that Mexico/Senior Fox gave President Bush before and during the Iraqi war, I will not buy any beer from Mexico. The same goes for any beer from Canada, Belgium or Germany.
Besides Corona is often priced over excellent West Coast Micro Brews. West Coast Micro Breweries are owned and operated by tax paying Americans, and their micro brews make a Coronal look like stale, you know what.

This is what RATS like to do instead of drink beer (good or bad):
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/924359/posts Hey, Gilligan! Next time you and your DU friends try this stunt, have the Captain shove the baggie up your aft port. You'll like it better than Corona I'll bet!
To: JIM O
I kind of like Corona, as a matter of fact I keep a small supply of it at my beach home and primary residence. That was smooth, kinda like a dagger slipped under the chain armor of envy. Nice work.

German beer is still king.
American Microbrews don't hold up to the numerious German local biers. You can't judge German beer by Lowenbrau or Spaten.
That being said, American Microbrews do produce very good beer.

Results from the Consumer Reports blind taste test:
Of the beers rated then and now, most did about the same. One exception was Old Milwaukee, tied for top domestic beer last time but lower in the pack this time. After our 1996 article, its brewer changed from Stroh's to Pabst. The new brew has a less intense flavor, with fewer of the fresh, floral, and fruity notes associated with better beers.

Hey G-Pa, it wasn't for the beer :)

Yeah, you have to be 21 to buy it. And some means of income to afford it.

If you started drinking beer after the federally mandated pasturising process was in place you lack a point of comparrison.
Carona has the full bodied taste that most American beers had before pasturization.
I'll never forget when I drank my first Falls City that had been pasturized, unbeknowenst to me. I spit it back in the glass. It had the after taste of soured milk.
Then came all the "lite" beers which were just watered down versions plus the pasturization.
I guess it's an age thing. It all depends on what you were brought up drinking mixed in with a lot of government medeling in an area where they don't belong.

Good points! There are a number of excellent West Coast brews that outshine everything except perhaps Guinness (which stands on its own due to their "unique" flavoring technique). Although the only beer I generally drink these days is the beer I brew myself.
