Three small companies that manufacture technologies that filter out the sex, gore and violence from DVD movies are hoping to avoid a protracted legal fight with Hollywood.

ClearPlay, Family Shield Technologies and Trilogy Studios filed a motion Friday in the United States District Court in Denver to dismiss claims that their products infringe on the copyrights of motion pictures.

Now why do they care if I (electronically) hold my hands over my eyes when I watch a movie? They still make the same amount of money! Maybe more! Methinks they complain because they have less of an influence on culture this way. They want to debase the culture inside your household. Of course, I'm sure they don't see it as debasement.

The studios would have a cause of action against anyone who were to publically exhibit an edited film without explicit permission, even if they had a general license to exhibit the film. Home use, however, is not covered by the "exhibition" part of copyright law.
