I live on Cape Cod MA and we have foxes . They come out in the day time as well as the night. They arn't a problem as far as I know. (maybe to chickens)
We do have a ferril cat taht keeps company with the neighborhood skunk. they are funny to watch together. But I'd be careful with your pup just the same. who knows. Its better to be safe than sorry.
good luck. PS we have coyotes too. they have folowed me at a close range then just walked off when I got in my car. scarey but fun after the fact. the trick there is (I guess) is not to panic.
I know I got off the tract but what the heck(;

I actually had people from back east try to persuade me that coyotes weren't pack animals. I guess my own eyes were lying to me.

I don't know about foxes, but all 48 lower states have coyotes. A coyote, or group of coyotes will attack your dog. Your pooch might be too curious for its own good.

there has been a rise in wild dogs throughout the eastern states to the point that the AKC now recognise a breed known as the "Carolina Yaller Dog". wild dogs innerbreeding to a standard that is recognisable. various sizes of dogs running wild may very well have familerized themselves with other doggie types. breeding between wolves and larger dogs is common as with coyotes and x-domestics in the south and mid-west. a fox is still a dog and if you silkie isn't fixed be ready for some funky puppies. i would bet that a fox would pick up the scent of a dog in heat. also if your silkie is a dominant female and the fox was in heat there could have been some interest on the part of the dog.

Interesting. I kept a shephard + coyote mix dog for a friend for a while when I was in Kansas. She was hard to get to calm down. I have been assured by other FReepers that this mix is a normal thing. But this dog was more than just aggressive. She would have killed for the fun of it.

I have never heard of the possibilty of a terrier and fox breed. If you know something in this area please let me know.

That is possible. One dog I had that diasappeared was last seen chasing a rabbit through the milo. I think he ran into a badger but I will never be sure.

Is that true, can a dog really breed a fox? I also am slightly bemused at the terrier not trying to kill the fox.

I am surprised your little dog didn't get eaten, honestly. I would scare off that fox if you ever see him again. He should not have been comfortable enough to let you see him.

Many of the spitz-type dogs with fox-faces are descended from outcrosses with types of foxes...

I live in southern Virginia and we have our Fox problems too, but I have never seen or heard of that scenerio. My dog (Goldie) would have a hey-day with it. Fox tend to be very unpredictable, who knows. Make sure you have the shots up to date and watch your chickens!

My wife keeps threatening to get some chickens. I told her that unless she is willing to sit outside with a shotgun 24/7 that I wouldn't bother.

we had chicken once. (actually twice) and the raccoons used to get them. they don't even try to defend themselves. they sit there and shake as the raccoon steals one of them. we had to close the chicken coop up every night before the coons came around. Of cource the same coons got our corn just as it ripened too. thats the last year we grew corn. then the Lab we had started to pick the tomatoes before we did. (the little x%#@) He would get the reddest one in his mouth and run around the yard with it. . pretty funny . we didn't need the tom. and we grew enough so eventually there was enough for all of us. (smile)

Your right about the coyotes being pack animals but because they are canine they do hunt solitary at times.
They are very quiet and sneeky when they are following you. this one actually lived by the ocean in the woods and came out everynight proweling the neighborhood. he never attacked anything or anyone but that is no comfort to me when they are behind me.

yes, terrier and fox is physically possible but highly unusual. my wife asked her friend (a vet) today after she read my post to you. the first thing she said was rabies.
