You can't upload an image to Free Republic.

You can link to an image available elsewhere on the web.

If you have a web site or other web presence, you can upload your image there and link it on Free Republic. The HTML for that is (very simply):

Ok, that helps.

But I'm not sure if I want to create a website just to post pictures.

And where could I find a free server that won't cut off direct linking, like Geocities and Tripod do?
