Steely Dan fans, I need your input

I have recently become more of a fan of Steely Dan and would like to check out more of their work. Any of you out there, which album would you recommend to get me started? I will probably buy only one CD every so often, so I wonder which one you all would consider the "best". Which one is strongest on nearly every track, and would give me a good introduction to their body of work?

I have seen many music threads here on chat, so I know many of you know a lot about music. What do you SD fans think?

Perhaps the best album they ever did was "Aja". I've been collecting their music for a very long time and I've also grabbed a couple of good bootleg recordings over the past few years as well. www.tapetradernetwork.com is a good site to look for this kind of stuff.

Cyber had this greatest idea for his brother: Go to the public library and check out CDs. You an preview the ones you would like to have, and it's all for free.

Check out "Countdown to Ecstacy" . It's their second album, and one of the last ones they recorded in a "band" dynamic as Fagan and Becker preferred to work with studio aces to capture their ever expanding musical ambitions. Though "Aja" is a great album, "Countdown" has a more human feel to it. In particular, check out "Razor Boy"

The beautiful thing about Steely Dan is that all of their albums are really good. Enjoy the listening.

I would recommend A Decade of Steely Dan" for anyone new to their music. It's a strong collection of some of their best songs. Of course there are always the "Greatest Hits/Best Of" snobs in the world who turn their noses up at such compilations, but I think it's a good place to start...especially if you're on a budget. I also recommend Donald Fagen's solo albums The Nightfly and Kamakiriad.

www.allmusic.com is a decent reference for any future music questions you might have (in addition to FR of course).

Thanks for the suggestions. I wasn't sure about a Greatest Hits, etc type stuff because I really want the whole experience of each album, but that Decade of Steely Dan may not be a bad investment.

I really got hooked on Steely Dan with the release of Aja more than a quarter century ago, and have remained a fan since. It has some truly awesome cuts.

Since I haven't seen any of the others post these, you may also wish to check into Pretzel Logic and The Royal Scam. Or Gaucho.

Gee, now I can't wait to get home to delve into my collection! Thanks, Charlie!

I like 'em. Like 'em a lot.

sorry for bumping this to the top. When I posted this last year, a really awesome guy sent me a Freepmail saying that he could send me all kinds of audio files and I never took him up on it because I didnt have the understanding of the technology. I cannot remember that dudes handle, but I am hoping he will see this again, as I believe I get how he could send me files now. I know its a shot in the dark, but oh well...

BUMP!
