Word For The Day, Monday
5/5/03

Posted on 05/05/2003 12:03:04 AM PDT by Bella_Bru

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Ok, it has been brought to my attention that some things were said somewhere else and were attributed to me and my feelings for WFTD. Originally, I was not going to be harsh, in fact I was going to apologize. Upon futher consideration though, I have decided I have nothing to apologize for. Let's take this step by step, shall we?

1. First off, I do not dislike WFTD nor do I dislike any of you. I rather do like you all quite a bit.
2. Second, I think my own thoughts, I have my own feelings. The person who I am with is NOT MY FREAKING SPOKESPERSON. Therefore, DO NOT ASSUME ANYONE ELSE'S WORDS ARE MINE. Believe it or not, even though I am female I do not rely on a male to provide my thoughts and feelings for me. People that do that are weak.
3. If you have any more ASSUMPTIONS or questions, you can FReepmail me, instead of having a FReepmail whisper-a-thon with each other, okie dokie?

Onto our WFTD.

a few summers back i had to go to the ER because of an allergic reaction to a sting, i think it was a yellow jacket, not a bee. i put ammonia on it right away, but almost felt like i was going to pass out and broke out into hives. it was scary. i had never had that reaction before.

it also made me take a dislike to lambs ear (are you familiar with the plant? don't know the scientific name for it) i was deadheading that, and there was a yellowjacket nest under the one plant and that is when i got it. i pulled every dang one of those plants out the following spring.

Oh, now I understand why it gets so much use! And requires the use of adjectives sometimes. ;) (WME)

I've only been stung by a yellow jacket once in my life. Dang, those things hurt. It caught me on my upper thigh. I was wearing a short skirt in the summertime. Thing just climbed up my skirt. Sheesh.

Speaking of amonia . . .

When you get stung by jellyfish whilst swimming in the ocean, the only way to get rid of the excruciating pain is amonia. Now, where would you get amonia on the beach?

Lambs' ears = Stachys. How scary! That's one I used to grow just because I liked the feel of it. It's not much to look at but now I'll rethink whether or not to replace it. I try to follow 'live and let live' with most insects when I'm outside(all must die if they enter the house) but bees that follow me around have a death wish that I will gladly grant.

my sting was on my forehead above my eyebrow. you know once it stops hurting it starts itching like mad.

i was bit previously at an Orioles game up in baltimore (back when xshub and i were dating and i had to still feign interest in baseball ; )) the yellowjacket was buzzing around his beer and i had my legs up on the seat in front of us and when i put them down, i got bit behind my thigh. xshub offered for us to leave the game and everything, he was very solicitous, but i didn't have any reaction at all then, after the sting of the bite. must be getting allergic in my old age, or maybe i was bit more than once and didn't realize it.

LOL....Before marriage, we were eating at a dockside restaraunt, and a yellowjacket landed on her collar....she went to brush it off with a napkin, and instead pushed it down and in, and I guess that made it mad....Ouch!

i liked it too, but besides the yellowjackets liking its blooms, the thing spreads like a dang WEED! someone told me recently that even if it is a plant you like, if it isn't where you want it, it is a weed! that is how i felt about the lambs ear. it was taking over. Now the lariope is trying to do the same thing. i am pulling that out like mad. i want the original clumps that i had, i don't want the whole front filled with it.

i think lifeguards keep ammonia in a spray bottle at the beach. xsboy got stung on his little...well YOU KNOW WHAT...and was bawling etc. and the lifeguard gave me the ammonia bottle and i sprayed it down in there.

That's how allergic reactions normally progress. The first time or two it's no big deal but if exposed to the allergen again, it can cause a severe reaction(like interfering with breathing!). Think of it as your immune system going into hyperdrive, like croqs when they see flooring. Benadryl and an epi pen are a must.

i was pretty paranoid after that reaction, but they didn't see the need to give me an epi-pen when i went to the ER. i have benadryl in the house and i have loosened up a bit and am coexisting peacefully with the insects. i did a lot of planting this past weekend, since the first communion is next Sat. had to spruce up the containers etc. i was rushed this year bc it took so long to warm up. i like to go to 3 or 4 garden centers and leisurely browse for things that are interesting. i went to 3, but there was nothing leisurely about it!

You can ask the class docs but I think they erred in not giving you a script for a pen when they dismissed you from the ER. ER docs are sometimes not the sharpest tools in the drawer(Keflex for everybody and everything!).

What's an epi pen?

I had heard about Adolph's Meat Tenderizer as an antidote to the jellyfish sting, but have never tried it. Hopefully, I won't be at the beach when the jellyfish begin their journey to the beach.

xs, there's an old Friends' show where one of the girls get stung by a jellyfish, and one of the guys urinated on the sting to get rid of the pain. Urine has a lot of amonia in it. I haven't tried this method myself . . .

Poor xsboy. Nasty place to have been stung.
