Digital camera recommendation
Posted on 05/04/2003 10:04:52 AM PDT by ru4liberty
Any eBayers here on FR? What kind of user-friendly digital camera do you recommend to get your images online?
Also, what site hosts your images? Are you happy with them?
I would appreciate any other information you might want to share about your eBay experience. FReepmail is fine if you prefer.
Thanks!

I must say I like the convenience of the Sony Mavica cameras that use floppy disc. This will always work, no matter what your computer. I originally bought mine when I was running WinNT and didn't have USB.
I host pics with my ISP, Earthlink. They give 10 megs free, which should be enough for non-commercial use. I uplad them using command-line FTP.

I use a Kodak DC3200. Not the top of the line, but it will do about 1 megapixel, has built in flash, uses Compact Flash memory cards, an LCD preview screen and its so user-friendly that it practically jumps out of the box and hugs you. Pricegrabber.com has it listed at $175- I found it on sale at Best Buy last summer for about $150.
http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=347438/ut=0ce9732bf9a4600d I also bought a memory card, a camera case, an external power supply, and a Sandisk USB flash card reader.
As for hosting, your ISP probably offers 5 or 10 megs for you to put a web page up as part of your subscription. I just use that- then there are no remote-linking issues like you get on some of the 'free webspace' providers.

Get a minimum of 4 Million pixels, and a zoom lens with optical zoom of 4 and magnification of 14 times in combination with the optical zoom.
These allow you to enlarge your photos to 16X20 without very much loss of clarity.
Of course, each photo will be about 11 megabytes so you need an expanded memory chip in the camera.
The Canon Powershot G3 retails for about $800 with a $100 manufacturers rebate right now. Don't be intimidated by the camera. (Easy for me to say, right?)

If you are strictly talking about photos for the internet and not for printing out pictures all you need is a 1.3megapixel Camera.
If you are printing photos you will need more pixels, I would say at least 3 MP.
Since I only use the camera for the internet, I got a 1.3MP Canon Powershot A- 10. It is an easy to use camera. You have a cord that attaches to you computer and all you do is attach it to the camera and you can upload your pics.
The price on the A-10 is down from over $300 to About $150. The next step up the 2 MP version is only about $40 more. These prices should continue to fall, and there are great buys out there.
Printing get all the MPS you can afford.
Just for posting photos on the internet a 1.3 is all you need. -Tom

Mrs. Fierro & I use an HP Photosmart 612 -- very basic, nothing fancy (3x zoom, preview screen, SmartMemory card). It came bundled with an HP color printer.
Easy to use, a little hard on the batteries, but easy to transfer images to your PC via USB cable.

It's large, kinda clunky, and it's the best digital camera I've tried: the Sony Mavica CD400.
There are a couple of models; the one I've got is a 4-megapixel unit.
Poorman loves it; he runs around snapping photos of me, mom, the cats, traffic, the lake...
A CD will hold hundreds of images, and you can preview them in place. You can download the images to your computer, or even view them on your TV with the included cable (you must have AV jacks on your TV or VCR).
It costs a few hundred, but I think it's worth it.

Also: I don't much use Ebay anymore, but when I did, I used
http://www.vendio.com , formerly Auctionwatch, to host my images. Looks like they charge now.

Do you uses any alternate auction site? I'm about fed up with eBay but tolerate it because it is still the biggest auction market out there.
I'm all for trying a new site! Thanks :-)

Hi ru! I occasionally sell on eBay, but my digicam is really crappy. It's an Agfa eSmile and is not even 1 MP. We haven't bought another yet because we want a 3-4 MP but really can't afford it yet. So we continue on with our crummy little camera :-)
Good luck to you!
