I sure wish Lott had said that last Winter rather than confirming the criticism by apologizing for what he said. Maybe he felt that the public couldn't appreciate the truth. That's too sad.

You are right about Truman, btw, although he was far better on race than his predecessor. Truman presided over the biggest sudden social change in America, the re-entry of the G.I.'s and their new-found egalitarianism into American society. In Democratic politics, Truman punted. In society, he led the way.

Are you so certain about Ike? I don't know that he avoided the issue. I'd be interested to know.

Btw, I think you meant that Strom and Lott were the highest black vote-takers among Southern Republican Senators... at least since Reconstruction. No matter, your point stands.

This kind of dynamic is so hard to explain in history whereby actors created events that did not have to happen. As you say, Democratic party empowerment of Southern racists reinforced their policies and added to the suppression of blacks.

A calmer attitude towards upholding of the law would have avoided the crisis that was the 1960s. My how things could have been different!

While LBJ added to the hysteria, he certainly mastered it to his party's benefit. The more I learn about him the more impressed I am by his skills, and by his heinous politics. It's like watching the other team's pitcher throw a no-hitter. The outcome sucks, but you're blown away by the performance.

As usual, I am educated by your posts.
I thank you, and I seriously mean that.

Perhaps if I phrased my point in another fashion, it might be perceived differently.

The Democrats are the party of Slavery, and they continue with the plantation mentality. Yes Massa, and all of that.

The Rats are winning the propaganda war concerning racial relations. I find that hard to believe, yet difficult to ignore.

Trent Lott should recognize that paradigm. His little salute to Strom Thurmon was a major gaffe.

We are in a war here. Lott mispoke, and the consequences for him were dire.

The Republicans dropped the ball in the 1960's concerning Equal Rights and all.

The Rats have been skating with that for 40 years now.

Trent Lott was deserving of a huge rebuke.

I am sorry that we disagree on this.

I admire you greatly and your posts are truly profound.
