Chicks Come Home To Roost (Sneak Peek-ABC Diane Sawyer Pseudo Apology 'fails miserably')
Short Cuts ^ | April 24, 2003 | Lcom staff

The Dixie Chicks are fighting back if that is what compounding the mess that they are in can be called.

Those who have already previewed the appearance tonight on ABC's Primetime Live with Diane Sawyer say that they have failed miserably.

It's billed as an 'apology' but they don't really apologize.

They also take their clothes off for Entertainment Weekley because--and get the muddled thinking here--because 'It's not about nakedness, it's about clothes getting in the way of labels.' Huh??

They also cringe about death threats.

But the worst is Martie Maguire's relevation that her grandfather is being harassed at a nursing home. So long girls, have a nice life.. (back to playing in Mexican Restaurants)

I watched the whole interview. It began with the cover photo from EWeekly, obviously placed there in the "11th hour" because it was obvious that the interview took place long before the cover photo was released; therefore there was no discussion of the whys and wherefores of the nude photo.

The girls were dressed conservatively but with sandals so one could see the chicken feet tattoos, to garner comments re: their success.

Most of the questions were directed towards Natalie. I was surprised that Diane played "hardball" because I expected her to give a "lite" interview per ABC "guidelines". She kept her questions very simple and direct. Seemed to me that she was trying to get to the "why" issue and Natalie admitted she should have used a word besides "ashamed"; finally said she should have used the word,"embarrassed".

Long story short: Natalie is a self-proclaimed "brat" who has always tested her boundaries; needs to have explanations for everything in life that she didn't understand. (Feel the tears coming?) When asked, for example, what she would say to Pres. Bush, she indicated she hoped he wasn't watching but then said, "Your show isn't long enough." You know, the questions she has that need answers. (Must be quite a list.)

My reaction, bottom line: the three are "more than sisters" (their words, not mine) and they just don't get it. Not unlike the anti-war club they are now members of.
They "just want to play their music" and are anxious about their USA tour. They kept their game faces on throughout--serious and confused.

My favorite: the title "Landslide" and they repeatedly played Natalie singing "landslide will bring you down."

Thanks. Did you not watch out of protest or because you had something else to do? Just curious.

It wasn't really protest. I'm not crazy about them or ABC.

When you live in the south (i.e. any southeastern state other than Florida), you just assume that the "major" networks will paint you as an ignorant "redneck." ABC has done it on many occassions, and I guess I thought it would be a likely component of this interview. Something like the enlightened Dixie Chicks are victims of southern bigotry.

So I guess the reason I didn't watch was more my dislike and distrust of ABC News than an inclination to protest the Chicks.

I honestly cant say I've never heard an explanation like that before, but then I don't travel in circles where there is much awareness of these distinctions. A bit of this was brought to us when we hired a guy from Mobile, Alabama. He told some interesting stories. Sounds like stuff for a movie, not real life.

The most disparaged demographic group in the country today are southern, white, Christian, males.

It is politically incorrect to tell jokes based on ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, etc. But you can tell them all day long about SWCMs. Think about the movie "Sweet Home Alabama." I enjoyed the movie, but it is a good example of the stereotype that media would like to portray. We don't all live in trailor parks. Some of us not only graduated from high school, we actually became doctors, stock brokers, CEOs, etc.

We have made great contributions to the space program and the technological advancement of warfare.

There are blessings to the misconception -- at least they don't think this is a place they would like live. We like that just fine.

I can't believe it. Really I can't. I don't hear this stuff. I grew up and still am in the Midwest and in my little community (and I mean little) we aren't privy to this.

I saw Sweet Home Alabama and thought it was stupid.
Couldn't believe anyone could say the silly stuff they said. Guess I missed the point--thank goodness.
