Kress was my favorite.

Kress stores were owned by the Kressge Company. In the south they used the name Kress to try to cover the fact they were owned by a Jewish family. In they north they went by the Kressge name.

When five and dime stores were going out, the company was reformed. Their new stores were going to be called Kressge Marts, but once again to hide their Jewish ownership they were called as KMarts instead.

Or as Paul 'whatshisname' would say that is the rest of the story.

My sister, the fashion maven, got her start in retail working the lunch counter at Kresge's in downtown Indianapolis. That was backbreaking work...she had to carry those huge metal racks with dishes and glassware from the washer area to the storage rack. Her customers ran the gamut from secretaries getting a quick cheap lunch to street bums nursing a cup of coffee for a couple of hours.

Needless to say, when confronted with salespeople who don't want to straighten shelves she hasn't much patience. Don't know why she is still a democrat, but she is.
