First Dixie Chicks, now Sandy Duncan: Fellow Texan says Bush not smart
4-17-03 | T he Times and Democrat

By NANCY WOOTEN, T&D Feature Editor Like the Dixie Chicks, Tony-award winning actress Sandy Duncan is a native of Texas and has serious concerns about fellow Texan President Bush and his decision to go to war.

Duncan wishes America had someone "really, really smart" as president, and someone more "globally aware."

The Dixie Chicks' lead singer Natalie Maines brought the group nothing but trouble when she told a London audience this past week that the country music group was "ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." Because of that statement, for which Maines later apologized, the "Chicks" are being boycotted by radio stations.

The South Carolina House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a resolution calling on the group to perform free for South Carolina troops as an apology.

It's Duncan, however, who will be in Columbia performing before South Carolinians.

A Broadway and television star since the '60s, Duncan will appear in "Sandy Duncan Celebrates Broadway" on April 1 at the Koger Center in Columbia.

In a telephone interview from New York about her appearance, Duncan didn't shy away from expressing opinion about war and world politics:

"I tend to be more of a liberal, and at this point in global history, war is just not a feasible option. I just wish men would quit thinking they could just duke it out with each other.

"I don't have all the facts, and who knows what's really the truth, but I don't really respect his (Bush's) way of dealing with this situation. It would have been great to have someone really, really smart in that office, and someone who is globally aware.

"Maybe there are some facts that we don't know -- or are we being manipulated by some factors other than those they have told us about?"

Duncan doesn't have a lot of trust in the media either.

"I don't think we're told the truth," she said. "There's so much rearranging of the words. They're not reporting anymore; they just rearrange the words of what was said before."

For example, Duncan said, when President Bush spoke Monday night, the newscasters who followed his speech merely repeated what he said in different words, to be followed by the radio and the newspapers repeating the same thing. Also, she feels, the news media are constantly putting a spin on a subject, stirring up controversy where there was none.

Born and raised in Texas, Duncan made her theatrical debut at age 12 in a Dallas production of "The King and I." She began her New York stage career with "Carousel" at the New York City Center and was nominated for three Tony awards for Broadway hits and two Emmy awards for television performances.

With fellow actors, she is very active in her work for Broadway Cares and The Phyllis Newman Women's Health Initiative, both of which are involved in seeking a cure for AIDS.

In the land of blind liberals, the one-eyed Duncan is Queen.

Aha! I'm glad I am not the only one who remembered that.

We had someone "really, really smart," supposedly, in the White House from '93-'01, but the problem was, he was a moral sinkhole.

Besides, Bush graduated from Yale, and has an MBA from Harvard. What academic credentials does Sandy Duncan have?

I think that President Bush has done a wonderful job as President, really the only thing i'm a little miffed over is this assault rifle ban he is in favor of renewing.

But let's just say that Sandy is partially right and he doesn't have the World Savy that some of the other Presidents have had. What he does have is the smarts to know that we as the U.S.A. have been riding down the road of complacentcy & were vulnerable as we found out on 9/11.

I think that he has swiftly let it be known that the U.S.A. is back on the job & we will kick the $hit out of anyone or any country if they give us any grief. That in itself is enough for me, I think she needs to go back to Never Never Land & cross dress as Peter Pan where she can live in the Clouds that she obviously is stuck in.

It appears now that she's completely blind.

Not to mention deaf, and "dumb."

Yeah, she is an absolute has-been, maybe she needs the negative attention. Never has someone been less aware of the political mood of the country. I can understand some celebrity hack -having mouthed off before the war- being reluctant to concede defeat, but to mouth off now is insane. Bush has been vindicated in spades and proven to be wiser than his Hollyweird critics. Duncan is insane. Maybe she figures the liberals who run Hollyweird might return her phone calls if she slams Bush. This is too weird!

Saw her in a couple of forgettable movies years ago. Didn't like her acting then. Haven't seen her since. Outside of NY she's not known that much, I'm supposing. Sounds like she's another Hollyweirdo trying to jumpstart her career by being controversial. She needs to be added to the boycott list.

And, being more of a liberal, what would she suggest as the alternative to getting rid of Saddam? "Conflict resolution"?

well, if you abandon him over the AWB, you're nuts. Do you think a toad like John Kerry would be more pro-gun than Dubya. If he rescinds the ban, it is gonna be arsenic in the water redux. He figures he has you in his camp, he is trying to get the soccer moms in the tent. please, don't get another bubba elected !!

I hit puberty just about the time Sandy was becoming famous. Thought she was a babe.

Heh heh. I am not at liberty to reveal my sources, but here's the site:

COLUMBO PARODIES AND COMEDIES

"Celebrity Glass Eye Theatre" (Late Night with Conan O’Brien)

A tasteless but funny television parody, purportedly starring Sammy Davis Jr, Sandy Duncan, and Peter Falk

Sammy Davis Jr (an eyeball) sings a song, then in comes Sandy Duncan (an eyeball wearing a Peter Pan hat), swinging from a wire and singing "I'm Flying."

A shot rings out, and Sandy is dead.

There's a knock on the door, and in comes...

Aww, you guessed! ....Right, an eyeball in a raincoat. He has just a few questions...

Not a chance my friend, read my whole comment before you go placing me in John Kerry's corner. I realize he's playing politics, all of them are. Listen, I'm a Bush backer even if he is screwing up on the gun issue. But he doens't need to alienate his faithful backers by catering to the Left wing nutcases.

Well, there are a lot of differences between a 14 year-old boy and a 43 year-old man. But, I won't go into them here. :)
