Twelve years ago, when Peter Arnett was holed up in Baghdad for the first war on Iraq, Sen. Alan Simpson (R-Wyo.) was widely condemned for calling Arnett an Iraqi "sympathizer" whose brother-in-law had been "active in the Viet Cong."

After Arnett's son wrote in the New York Times about the pain Simpson's "smear" had caused the Arnett family, Simpson apologized to the New Zealand-born journalist, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting in Vietnam. "I greatly regret the hurt, pain and anguish I have caused," Simpson wrote to the Times.

But yesterday the 72-year-old retired senator was in no mood to apologize.

I'm surprized Sen. Simpson was so mild in his assessment of Peteah.

I'd like to give Peteah some advise:

Meanwhile, intimates of the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Moynihan's Senate successor, Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), are denying a U.S. News & World Report item that the Moynihans are upset with Clinton for announcing his death on the Senate floor last Wednesday "without the family's OK," while friends were still being notified privately. The magazine quotes "a family representative" as saying: "It wasn't hers to announce. It was classless." Yesterday, after Moynihan was interred at Arlington National Cemetery, Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines told us his boss "delivered her tribute to Senator Moynihan after she and her colleagues had already been told in a caucus meeting, and has received only positive feedback from his friends and family." Family friend Lawrence O'Donnell said it was Clinton's proper role to give the leadoff tribute in the Senate: Widow "Liz Moynihan doesn't have a problem with how all this unfolded, and was very appreciative of Senator Clinton's role—which was very appropriate."

Are we to believe that the widow Moynihan has any idea what hillary did? Please.
