Reversed Flag emblem on right shoulder of uniform

Posted on 03/27/2003 10:02:53 AM PST by freebird5850

I saw the other day a soldier wearing an american flag on his right shoulder but the union was on the right of the patch? Any explainations?

They might have printed the picture backwards.

You saw this in person, or a photo that was published? It might have been flipped (reversed). They do that all the time in newspapers and on the 'Net.

The left shoulder is reserved for the divisional insignia. The flag on the right shoulder is shown with the stars forward, as not to appear to be blowing backwards; the wearer's arm is its "flagpole". I recall this issue discussed from Gulf War 1

Stars always to the front. These are in wide circulation.

Simple answer. When the flag is worn on the RIGHT shoulder, the blue field is in the upper right so that it appears as it would if it were flying on a flag pole and the wind was coming from the wearer's front.

Next time you are at the airport, look at the flag on the right side of the rudder on an airliner.

The flag is displayed as though the wearer is always moving forward. If the flag patch were "normal" on the right shoulder, it would appear that the person was retreating. The US military NEVER retreats.
