Great Colin Powell quote.....

Powell Quote...(not sure when this happened)
When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire building by George Bush.
He answered by saying that, "Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return."
It became very quiet in the room.

Great and poignant response.
A bit disingenuous, though, since we control pretty much the entire planet at this point in time.
But anything that puts the Archbishop of HarryPotterbury in his place is good news.

Fantastic quote! I hope this one's the genuine article (unlike the "13 percent are Marines" urban legend). I'm sure if someone knows one way or the other, they'll pipe up soon.
Thanks for posting that. One of the best I've read all day.

No, I don't think this is for real. This quote popped up yesterday, and somebody mentioned they were unable to find any news source reporting it.

So many people around the world have forgotten (if they ever really knew) who we are.
I've had my ups and downs re Powell, but he is one hell of an ambassador for the USA.

That is a great quote. I believe the idea came out of Powell's nomination of the American G.I. as a Time Person of the Century back in 1999 or 2000.

I hadn't heard this quote before. Thank you.
God Bless our HONORABLE NATION, OUR TROOPS AND PRESIDENT!! Where would the WORLD be without them? God Bless the Brits, Aussies and all our Allies in our VERY HONORABLE ENDEAVORS!!

You don't think Powell believed in the UN, and has changed his attitude after being mugged by them? I think Powell honestly thought the "international community" (gag) just didn't have enough evidence and if Powell proved to them Saddam had WMD, they'd support us. Getting stabbed in the back by France (and in the front by China, Russia and Germany) has been a real wake-up call for lots of Americans, and I think Powell is one of them. Do you really think it was all staged by Powell from the begining? (Not hostile, just curious -- I'm just reacting to his language and attitude that I see on the tube.)

The last war where we really got anything in terms of land was the Spanish American War, and we gave back most of the spoils (Cuba). And we're still paying for Puerto Rico.

I hope this one isn't another urban legend. It's awesome.

Whether it is an urban legend or not, as we say in the south, 'it needed saying!'

The Archbishop of Canterbury is a rabid socialist. This is typical of the leadership in most of the Anglican Communion. And also why membership is declining in the industrial world.
The only place where the Anglican church is growing is in Africa. With the exception of Bishop Tutu, most of the hierarchy in Africa is fairly conservative.

Even if there is, I sure hope admin wasn't downgrading the magnitude of the Secretary's attitude!!!
P.S. I'll show you my new tagline, if you'll show me yours.

A bit disingenuous, though, since we control pretty much the entire planet at this point in time. Back to DU, troll.
If you can't see the difference between the potential to do so, and the reality of it, there is no hope for you.
The U.S. is the first and only power in history, ever, to have the ability to physically conquer the world and fail to succumb to the temptation.
Except of course, in the minds of jackasses like you.
