(letter to listeners from their website) While on stage in London Natalie Maines made an off-the-cuff and inappropriate remark about President Bush. These comments have caused a lot of frustration and anger from fans. We have received many emails and calls on the subject. After careful consideration, we would like to share our position.
Natalie expressed her personal opinion and they do not neccessarily represent the views of WUSN. However, punishing the girls by not playing any of their music also seems inappropriate. Simply stated, "Two wrongs don't make a right." One of the great freedoms in this country is the right to voice your opinions - even unpopular ones.
Likewise, you have the right to not purchase their cd, tear up your concert tickets, or simply choose to not purchase any of their tour merchandise at the concert.
We hope you recognize that US*99.5 stands firmly behind our troops. In light of what our men and women in the armed forces are currently facing, this controversy seems very small indeed.
We, like you, will continue to pray for our troops, the people of Iraq, and that God will continue to bless the United States Of America!
I, for one, have become so tired of this odious and irrelevant cliche`. There is a smart-a$$ reply that, that I believe it always deserves.
Two wrongs don't make a right, but two Wrights can invent the airplane"!
The "Dixie Chicks" have stuck their foot in their mouths and now expect the American audience to applaud the sucking sounds. I say cut them off the air. What they said was in a foreign land and they were "a' tellin' tales outa' school" .
As for the "bogus" argument of "Free Speech" . Oh. puhleeze! Give me a break! If government tried to ban them, that's censorship and not Constitutionally "Kosher". However, it is perfectly legal and Constitutional for the consumers of a free market to reject the product, of any producer, for any reason.
Americans know what the "Chicks" did. They flipped the President the finger from on stage in England to pander to their audience. If they'd done the same thing in Midland, TX, would the Confederate Air Force have let them get away with it.
Unfortunately, you can not "stand firmly behind our troops" when you condone Americans bashing America on foreign soil during time of crisis. I understand you precious radio jobs depend on ticking off as little of the public as possible, but this attempt to walk the line fails miserably. You cannot placate both sides and keep your audience by simply saying you support the troops when your actions firmly indicate otherwise. This controversy is hardly "small" (although trying to diminish it was a clever trick as well), for it speaks volumes on what proper behavior for Americans on foreign soil ought to be. Maines' behavior goes a long way to dangerously erode support for our troops, and if you don't see that, then it is your perception that is "small."
Until you are clued in count me tuned out,

Good for you to catch them on this bit if sophistry and shove it up their nose. I rolled on in with my e-mail. This LA stations crew is mostly hat and no cattle, so what they do will brand them for a long time. If they respect our boys as they claim. they'll loose the "Chicks", for the duration of the war.
Thanks so much for reminding me of one of my favorite phrases!
