In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of word for the day. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the word of the day; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Teacher's note:
Please help me welcome Lunatic Fringe to our class! Also, due to the fact that I missed class yesterday, you will all recieve A's.
palaver\puh-LAV-ur; puh-LAH-vur\, noun:
palaver, intransitive verb, transitive verb
1.Talk; conversation; especially: a. idle talk b. talk intended to beguile or deceive.
2. A parley usually between persons of different backgrounds or cultures or levels of sophistication; a talk; hence, a public conference and deliberation.
Other forms:
intransitive verb:
To use palaver; to talk idly.
transitive verb:
To use palaver to; to flatter; to cajole.
[H]e is glad to palaver of his many adventures, as a boy will whistle after sundown in a wood. --O. Henry, "The Man Higher Up"
Etymology: Palaver derives from Late Latin parabola, a proverb, a parable, from Greek parabole, from paraballein, to compare, from para-, beside + ballein, to throw. In Medieval Latin, parabola acquired the further senses 'word' and 'tale, story', whence Portuguese palavra (compare Spanish palabra, word), whence palaver , with its own new, naturally derivative senses.

I am now reading Bernard Goldberg's book, "Bias".
He included an entire chapter entitled "How Bill Clinton Cured the Homeless Problem".... which details how the media sycophants were bemoaning the "homeless problem" in the US for 10 years, but - amazingly - ceased any and all mention of the problem the minute Slick was inaugurated.
But, alas, 8 years later, guess what! The homeless were BACK by the millions!!

i specifically checked this AM to see if it was delayed or cancelled, but just the farflung counties called it earlier. the close in ones were trying to tough it out obviously. they had said 1-2 inches by evening, it has to be that by now, and still snowing.

correction - they have started closing schools on the eastern shore of Maryland.
Most likely they will start closing the schools early here as well.

Gabz, my sweet, come here when it is 115 degrees. And, you know, they measure temperature in the shade.
It's really pretty right now, though, even with the rain. The cacti are blooming. I'm getting buds on the mulberry tree.
Last year we planted an Arizona variety of Birds of Paradise. Same colors, only different flowers. They just love the heat. Those little things are now getting big!
So far the heat has killed my roses and my beloved irises. But I'm finding new and interesting plants now. Just have to keep looking at other people's flowers to see what will grow in this heat.

how much snow have you had?About a foot and a half so far. Even if we had gotten it all at once, they wouldn't have cancelled school. Bear in mind, we had snow in every month except July last year.

"We haven't had a single snow day all year."That is not the norm, is it, CJ? Looking at the weather patterns, everything seems to be dropping south from Idaho, then around the midwest, it heads north for these viscious storms.

yes i am sure you are better equipped to clear the roads, and that there is much less traffic traveling those roads. that is a major difference and why they missed so much school here. i still can't believe the snow total here is greater than there. i am sure you will pass us.

That is not the norm, is it, CJ? Oh we've had snow. Just not enough at one time to cancel school. It would take 2-3 feet for that to happen.

are you feeling
empowered today?
Shopping for shoes has emerged as a powerful means by which women assert their autonomy," Klein said. "Owning and wearing dozens of pairs of shoes is a compelling way for a woman to announce that she is strong and independent, and can shoe herself without the help of a man. She's saying, 'Look out, male-dominated world, here comes me and my shoes.
