I suspect some parents name their daughters something that goes very poorly with their surname - as an incentive to marry young.

Speaking of initials:
One day at work, a woman was talking about how her daughter came home from school in tears. The children were told to mark their art work with initials, and the other little 3rd graders made fun of her initials . Her name is:
Amy Sue S*******.
"Why did you name me ass, mommy?" My coworker quoted her daughter.
And it's not a bad name , though I hate the practice of giving nicknames as names : Amy Sue instead of Amelia Susan/Suzanne, Wendy instead of Gwendolyn, Peggy instead of Margaret (still can't figure out how Margaret turns into Peggy instead of just Meg(gy) or Maggie, but anyway...),Kathy instead of Katherine, Beth instead of Elizabeth, Carrie instead of Caroline , etc etc.
