In defense of hunting -- I listened to a talk show on a Canadian public radio station, and I learned that the number of nuisance bears killed by Ministry of Natural Resources wardens and police officers is almost the same number as were taken by spring hunters. The big difference is that hunters buy a license, pay for lodging, eat in local restaurants and spend money in other ways. The wardens and police officers have to be paid,
and the black bears, instead of being mounted by a taxidermist (more revenue) and honored for decades, are tossed in landfills.

I wrote on this topic more extensively in my book, The Joy of Work. So I’ll just give you the highlights here. The core of humor is what I call the 2-of-6 rule. In order for something to be funny, you need at least two of the following elements:
Cute (as in kids and animals)
Naughty
Bizarre
Clever
Recognizable (You’ve been there)
Cruel
I invented this rule, but you can check for yourself that whenever something is funny it follows the rule. And when something isn’t, it doesn’t.
One of the reasons comics are such a popular form of humor is that they often get the cute part automatically
And it isn't just from the GOP's official website.

As James Lileks wrote in his syndicated column this week, it seems like the entire left desperately wants it to be 1972, when Kerry was at the height of his
Winter Soldier treason, inflation was about to go through the roof, the stock market was flat, South Vietnam was about to get pancaked, and the Iranian Hostage Crisis was right around the corner.
Best Liberal Blog - They picked a good selection for these finalists as well. I think
TalkLeft (Jeralynn Merritt) and
Matthew Yglesias might be the most consistently well-written of the group, and
Ezra Klein makes the best arguments for the liberal cause.

Georgia Congressman Jack Kingston links to a Media Research Center study of coverage of the Iraq war by the three broadcast news networks. Sure, you knew it was bad, but MRC has the figures:
Network coverage has been overwhelmingly pessimistic. More than half of all stories (848, or 61%) focused on negative topics or presented a pessimistic analysis of the situation, four times as many as featured U.S. or Iraqi achievements or offered an optimistic assessment (just 211 stories, or 15%). News about the war has grown increasingly negative.In January and February, about a fifth of all network stories (21%) struck a hopeful note, while just over half presented a negative slant on the situation. By August and September, positive stories had fallen to a measly seven percent and the percentage of bad news stories swelled to 73 percent of all Iraq news, a ten-to-one disparity.
Interesting. That coincides with the Democrats' "Bush lied!" attack, and with the President's precipitous fall in the polls.
Even coverage of the Iraqi political process has been negative. More stories (124) focused on shortcomings in Iraq’s political process — the danger of bloodshed during the January elections, political infighting among politicians, and fears that the new Iraqi constitution might spur more civil strife — than found optimism in the Iraqi people’s historic march to democracy (92 stories). One-third of those optimistic stories (32) appeared on just two nights — January 30 and 31, just after Iraq’s first successful elections. Few stories focused on the heroism or generous actions of American soldiers. Just eight stories were devoted to recounting episodes of heroism or valor by U.S. troops, and another nine stories featured instances when soldiers reached out to help the Iraqi people. In contrast, 79 stories focused on allegations of combat mistakes or outright misconduct on the part of U.S. military personnel.

Free Dominion is in dire straits --
the past month has been an absolute horror show. Many of you noticed this morning that Free Dominion was down for awhile... our service provider shut us down... And, we were informed this morning that we have to move by the end of the month.
To make matters worse, we have been dealing with a computer that is on its last legs.
The upshot of it all is that we are going to need some help to keep Free Dominion going because we can't afford to do it out of our own pockets this month.

use this forum to discuss all issues in regards to the proposed handgun ban.-- I am appalled and disgusted that the Liberal party would propose such an amazingly oppressive policy as a sweeping handgun ban. Have you learned nothing from the failed C-68 and it's gun registry?
Prime Minister Martin has proposed a handgun ban. More laws for the law abiding, denying them their rights to their property. To ban guns because criminals use them is to tell the innocent and law-abiding that their rights and liberties depend not on their own conduct, but on the conduct of the guilty and the lawless.
This is an exercise of political optics of the worse kind. After the failure of the 2 billion dollar Gun Registry coupled with the failure of the federal courts to sentence criminals for crimes - and look where that logic got us: criminals with illegal unregistered firearms, shooting each other in our cities.
Australia and Britain have handgun bans, and suffer daily from some of the worse crime in the history of their country.
The Good News Is Good ...They have transcended the kamikaze pilots of World War II to become a kamikaze movement...

The question always remains - how do you ban anything from criminals?
