Francis Bellamy, Baptist minister and "Christian socialist" (not a communist) is generally credited with the first draft of such a pledge (circa 1892). However as others suggested changes or added their own language to his draft, he rebelled and would no longer support it. Support for national adoption (which finally came 50 years later in 1942) was left largely to such organizations as the American Legion, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Boy Scouts and the Knights of Columbus. Those groups can hardly be described as communist.
