The solstice is not necessarily the shortest daytime of the year. For instance, I live at 44 degrees north latitude. The earliest sunsets here are at 4:15 PM from December 3rd through December 15th. The latest sunrises are at 7:30 AM from January 1st through January 4th.

The day which had the least minutes of sun for my location was December 18th.

Thank you Petunia, for the reminder the Daylight hours will start to get longer again. Also used the picture for a Screen saver in celebration of the Solstice.

Did you ever watch the tv series, Northern Exposure? If you did, one of my favorites was the lighting of Candles in the village, in the darkest part of the year.
