On the subject of flying with the side door open: actually that's really common. Most military helos will fly with the door open most of the time. Exceptions are when at altitude on a long cruise trip, to cut down on noise and get some *heat* in the cabin.
Otherwise they'll often fly with the door open, especially when at low altitude or over water. It's a egress thing... lot's easier to bail out of a crashed bird if the door is already open.

course, bailin' outta a chopper is made more interestin' by the madly spiinin' quisinart that's followin' yuh down... done it twice... don't care to do it again...
