I've spent many a romantic evening in the garden with my hubby...squashing cutworms! Are cutworms the same as night crawlers? Earthworms?

No, nightcrawlers are good for the garden, good for fishin! They till up the earth, aerate and fertilize the soil. They are a beneficial.
Cutworms curl into a ball and sleep during the day, then come out at night and eat huge chunks of plants, esp. things like broccoli. Sometimes, with new seedlings, you can wake up in the morning to find your plant cut off at the base, just lying on the ground. Very disappointing! Putting a dixie cup around the base of your plant will help prevent that. They are a pest.
