One time I got about $5 back from the Fed and had to pay $4 to the state! Ha!

Well...I shouldn't be complaining! Year before last, the place where I was working messed something up and didn't take enough out - I ended up owing close to $300 to the feds and $25 (not quite so painful!) to the state. That's quite a bit when you're used to getting a good sized refund, as I always did in the military.
