The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

This way you might want to moot again when we can all come along!

Yeah, maybe, we'll see.

Help! I got Klez! I got it as an attachment that I couldn't see on my hotmail account. I didn't open the attachment, because I couldn't see where to open it, but when I forwarded it to my yahoo account I could see there was an attachment. I haven't got the forwarded email at yahoo yet.

What do I do? Any idea? Am I ok, because it came through my hotmail account and not my IE?

don't open it when it comes certainly.

Do you have a virus checker on your machine? and is it up to date?

There are a bunch of variants on klez.

The ones I got were called "Cellspacing" and "A good tool". I have McAfee...should I run a scan right now?

If McAfee was up to date, it should have found and deleted the attachment before you could get to it. Are you sure it didn't? - that is why you couldn't find the attachment perhaps?

Is it up to date? - My PC-Cillan updates itself every few days. Go to McAfee's update page and make sure you have the latest updates, or it won't make any difference if you scan it.

Does McAfee automatically scan when you are browsing or checking mail? - it should.

It connects to the internet and then scans from the McAfee.

I think! LOL

It came through my hotmail account and I got one from my mom and one from my sister-in-law, which leads me to believe that it's from my MIL.

You need to install a virus checker on your machine that starts up and runs all the time browsing, and when your mail comes in.

As for this virus, I think you are OK if you just delete it without opening.

Antivirus is worth buying, even if you don't use Outlook, but especially if you do. I love Outlook, but it is popular, and therefore, always under attack.

I have PC-Cillan on my machine, and they have a 30-day trial that will get you started, if you want...

I haven't used the others, but any of them are better than nothing! If you have McAfee, then update that right now.... if you are just doing an occasional on-line scan, that is not protection, just clean up.

Maybe, they might have gotten and spread it, but these viruses also choose random names out of address books to mask as the "sender". But by their nature, viruses will always come from someone you know.

My brother in law said he got a suspicious email from me the other day from my email address from 2 years ago...and while my MIL was down, she said she tried to email me but it kept bouncing back because she had my email wrong. I suspect she still has my old email in her address book and also my hotmail address.

I just put 2 and 2 together and figured he'd gotten a hit too.

Besides, she told me she never even considered opening an attachment from someone she didn't know, but opens all the attachments from people she does know, which is why she'd never get a virus. I tried to explain Klez to her, but she wouldn't listen.

sigh.

Well, before I had virus software installed, or understood the types of attachments that can have scripts in them... I got fooled by one that said it was a cool screensaver. Anyone can be fooled once.

Luckily, I could see the hundreds of messages spooling to my outbox, and shut off my modem before any really got out the door.

No pics yet ksen! I have to use up at least half of the film in this camera before I can justify taking it to be developed. I'll take a few of the baby and Becky tonight and then have the film developed tomorrow and post the pics by tomorrow night. :)

I've got just a few minutes of peace before the baby wakes up again, so I thought I'd post a response. *grin*

Klez is a big pain!

2J - Go to McAfee's website and see about downloading a patch to remove Klez. You will have to update your virus definitions first and run a scan in order to determine which Klez you have.
